My 13 year old mixed has mild arthritis in one "knee". My vet (excellent
vet) recommended Phycox. It sounds good but expensive and I wonder if there are any proven aids that are less costly. Any ideas are much appreciated! |

Any ideas are much appreciated! We've had two dogs with fairly severe arthritis, and we treated it with Adequan shots. Both dogs' mobility increased tremendously after we started on the shots. One is given every 4-6 weeks (by vet or you). Our vet charged about $32/shot. Google on Adequan for more information. I'm hoping it's approved for humans before too long - my knees, ya know... We also gave Deramaxx, glucosamine and msm and fish oil caps (for omega-3 fatty acids), which probably helped, but the dramatic improvement came with the Adequan shots, and we could see a difference in how the dogs walked and their liveliness within a day after each shot. When our BC, Scully, had her spinal stroke the orthopedic surgeon who examined her discovered that her left hip displayed serious arthritic changes. It had to have been hurting. We'd have never guessed without the x-rays. No limping, no outward sign of pain. Dogs are really stoic, so if the OP's dog is actually displaying distress he or she is really hurting. Upon the vet's advice we started her on Adequan injections to ease her pain and help delay additional damage. The loading dose was two shots per week for a month, then once per month. We give her the shots at home. Adequan is given subcutaneously - no big deal. The vet sent her prescription to an online pharmacy, we pay by credit card and they mail us the drug and the syringes. Saves time, money and stress on the dog. |

When I had K.C. on Adequan for his hip dysplasia many many years ago, the manufacturer's instructions were to give it I.M. I just double-checked and those are still the instructions on the package insert (http://www.luitpold.com/canine/education/insert.htm) but I did find other links on the 'net indicating that other people are also administering it sub-Q. (I'm with you - I have no problem giving sub-Q injections or fluids, but have never worked up the courage to do I.M. injections!) Also FWIW, when Patience developed arthritis in her spine, the holistic vet that did her accupuncture told me that Adequan and/or glucosamine would do no good since the spinal joints aren't synovial joints (i.e. they're not filled with fluid like the hip joints are.) Just another couple of data points. Dianne |

She offered to teach me, but I didn't want to mess with that, especially in a Chihuahua. I figured, better to have Chile fear the vet than fear me. FurPaw -- The plural of anecdote is not proof. Any ideas are much appreciated! Rimadyl is not too costly and works well with my large dog (Newfoundland) and I have also been an advocate for many years of just plain "ascriptin", a coated aspirin, one a day, very inexpensive and works well....this was recommended to me several years ago by a vet that is VERY GOOD. I also had a dog that had suffered from a spinal cervical incident, acupuncture was very successful with her, required only one treatment http://doghealth.doghealthtoday.com http://dogstuff.kaylar.com |
