Default Outdoor cat?

Any suggestions on shelter for an outdoor cat/kitten? It appears a starving
cat/kitten has adopted us. The poor thing is nothing more than skin and
bones. It belongs to some crappy neighbor who's outdoor cat spits out at
least two litters a year, most of whom appear to disappear/die? It's the
same cat that dropped off a litter in daughters garage right before the
puppy litter.

I'm sure that somebody in comp.unix.wizards would be able to
answer your question. Have you tried alt.acting?

TNR is needed if you want to break this cycle.

As for solving the problem, the adult cat belongs to the neighbors. It
doesn't come across the street to my house. It appears extremely cautious
of people, doesn't approach any of us neighbors. A number of other
neighbors have spoken to these people about their cat, to no avail,
especially their next-door neighbor who is extremely pissed about all these
poor kittens. The kitten, I'd guess it's probably halfway between kitten
and cat. It's not a baby kitten, but it's not a full grown cat either. I
am going to call around tomorrow to get prices on an initial cat visit, what
ever cats get/need. Then, when I find out if it's male or female, I'll
check into whether there is a low cost spay or neuter available. The kitten
is sociable. It comes right to me, I can pick it up, which is how I felt
all it's bones through it's skin/fur. Last night and today we gave it a can
of tuna, pretty much all we had on hand that we thought appropriate for
cats. Dh went and got it some kitten food, dry, and I've given it a bowl of
that, wetted with a bit of water. It ate the two cans of tuna, last night
and this morning, and now it's eaten nearly that whole dish of dry
food/mushed with water.

I hate getting involved with cats because of my daughters asthma. I know I
can't have a cat indoors, never could, so I try to avoid getting involved
with cats. But this one is so pathetic, and apparently has already been
turned away by the rest of the neighbors, so it's ended up here. It's very
sweet, and so very starved. If it's going to be around, I need to provide
shelter for it.

I was wondering if something like this,

http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...3&pcatid=18633

was appropriate for outside sleeping arrangements or if I should check into
something like a little igloo or plastic type thing. I have a sheltered
corner on our open front porch. It's a covered porch, but unscreened, I
mean. It has an inside corner that is very sheltered from both wind and
rain. I thought perhaps I could put something there for cat to sleep at
night. I'm just not sure where or what sort of arrangements cats like for
sleeping?

Exactly how has it "adopted you" then?

I thought it didn't approach "any of us neighbors"? Color me confused.

Either take responsibility or don't. Half-assed caring isn't all that
useful to the big picture.

It hasn't. She said that one of this cat's *offspring* seems to have
survived, and adopted them.

Again, she's referring to the half-grown offspring, not to the mother.

(Which, FWIW, is perfectly clear to me in both of td's posts.)

Until that cat, plus all of her kittens, are spayed/neutered, the
problem will only get worse.

I'm not trying to tell you what to do, TD, just that the problem will
only get worse until *someone* does something about it.

I hate getting involved with cats because of my daughters asthma.

You've already done that. Feeding a cat essentially makes it yours.

Now you only have to decide what you're going to do with her.

I was wondering if something like this,

http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...3&pcatid=18633

That's really not for outdoors, even in your area.

The one I posted about above is.

Paint it the same color as your house. Put the cat's food inside the
house, and eventually she may come to sleep there, too.

As with cats generally, there are no guarantees.

I'm just not sure where or what sort of arrangements cats like for
sleeping?

I think the answer to that is: Your bed.

I have to go back and re-read then, because it didn't come across all
that clearly to me.

My general opinion stands though. Take responsibility or don't, but the
halfway stuff really doesn't work so well. "Outdoor" cats (not
indoor/outdoor) generally don't have such long lives, and of course,
even less so depending on intact and vaccination status.

Not really. It's too flimsy (would blow away, and likely rot after not too
long in the elements), and doesn't have enough insulation.

or if I should check into something like a little igloo or plastic type

Your best bet, IMO, would either be a cat shelter like Jack posted, or a
small doghouse designed for outdoor shelter and insulation.

I thought perhaps I could put something there for cat to sleep at night.
I'm just not sure where or what sort of arrangements cats like for

That area would probably work. Indoor cats like any area that's comfy,
some like to be enclosed; outdoor cats like any area that's safe & offers
shelter from the elements, including cold. The semi-feral cats that my
friend Bob inherited hang out on the steps & in the bushes when it's nice
out, go into the crawl space & root cellar (he inherited them along with a
very old farmhouse) when it's cold.
Personally, I think I'd be looking for a flat-roofed shelter/doghouse, and
put a carpet remnant or the like on the roof; cat can go in when enclosure's
wanted, be on top when not.
