Apparently, I am made of money. Who knew?!

Harriet started developing a rash about a week and a half ago. At
first, I thought it was spider bites or something like that. It was
just a few discrete bumps along her sides and back. I decided to wait
and see, before doing anything. They didn't get any worse for a few
days, and then, early this week, they suddenly blossomed into a full-
blown rash. It's worse on her chin, knees, and belly, because that's
where she can reach the easiest to lick.

The vet thinks it's hives, which sounds like a reasonable first guess.
She gave Harriet antibiotics and a short course of pred. If it's
allergies, Harriet's symptoms should improve pretty quickly. If they
don't, then we'll have to come up with Plan B. (I'm concerned that it
might be sarcoptic mange. The timing would be just about right, if
she'd contracted it when she was in for her surgery. I told the vet
this, but she didn't think it looked like mange, especially since it
started on the back and sides. She's going to check to see if they had
any mange patients around that time period, though. It gives us
something to consider if it turns out not to be allergies.)

So it was a pretty mundane visit, until I went to the desk to pay. I
had Harriet sitting right next to me, on a short leash. A fat houndy
dog came up and sniffed her. She snarked at the other dog. Duh. I
told her to knock it off and apologized to the other owner, who said,
"Oh, that's okay, my dog is grumpy, too." WTF?! If you know your dog
is grumpy, keep it the hell away from my dog!

What is wrong with people?

Um, a lot?

Poor Harriet and poor you (and your pocketbook). Hope thing improve.
This is generally a horrid season for allergies, so I hope it is that
simple.

Apparently! The embarrassing part was that the vet had just been
gushing over how sweet and well behaved Harriet was. Oopsie!

Thanks! Fingers and toes crossed. She really needs some relief.

Harriet. Otherwise, she won't be pulling this stuff. Clearly.

Very weird.

Ayup. She has had allergy issues before, so it isn't an unreasonable guess
at all.

She gave Harriet antibiotics and a short course of pred.

Watch out for the peeing. Prednisone always made Khan pee buckets (probably
not helped by that Cushing's either), even on really small doses.

If they
don't, then we'll have to come up with Plan B.

I for one really hope it's just allergies. Skin problems can be a bitch to
troubleshoot (and I may have news to report on that front in a couple of
weeks).

Lack of branes, for one thing.

Well she needs to knock it off!

The vet warned me about excess drinking and peeing, and possibly
accidents, too. It's only for two weeks. Hopefully, she'll be able
to hold it while I'm at work. If not, I'll have to adjust my
schedule.

Amen! But so are allergies.

(and I may have news to report on that front
in a couple of weeks).

Good news, I hope!

Khan was on 10 mg Prednison daily, and peeing buckets. It got so bad we had
to drop his dose rather precipitously and stop sooner than we should've(not
recommended).

Good news, I hope!

At this stage, yes. I'm not a meticulous enough record keeper that it is
beyond a margin or error (or more than a figment of my imagination), so I'm
going to wait a couple of weeks.

In vet adventure news, I just received my reminder for the beasts' annual
checkup. HW test, titer, geriatric panel and BP check all around, plus Khan
gets another thyroid panel and adrenal panel. This ought to be fun for man
and beast, not to mention, the wallet. I don't think I've ever paid into
the four figures for a single vet checkup, but this one might do it.

Yikes! I know they're supposed to be weened off it, so that can't
have been good. Hopefully, Harriet will not turn into a peeing
machine.

Nor am I, and that has to stop. I would maybe be having better luck
tracking down what Harriet might be reacting to if I'd been paying
better attention.

Especially fun, since if I recall correctly, Khan isn't a huge fan of
the vet. Good luck!

Ouch! I had one of those once, and it made the Baby Shelly cry. I'm
sure Melinda has no pity, though.

No, of course I have sympathy for people paying those kinds
of bills, but it's always nice to frame it in terms of your
contribution to job creation. Also, I find that as I'm
writing a check with a lot of zeroes it helps a *lot* to say
"I LOVE MY DOGS" in a high, squeaky falsetto voice.

It was bad enough when he had to go out every hour or hour and a half, but
it got ridiculous when he was in and out multiple times an hour, round the
clock. I get really cranky on no sleep for 2 or 3 straight days. Makes me
wonder how I got through grad school, where during my worst week, I slept a
total of 3 hours.

Nor am I, and that has to stop. I would maybe be having better luck

If you've changed anything recently, that'd be one. It has gotten colder,
and if heating is on, it can dry out the skin and cause problems as well.

Especially fun, since if I recall correctly, Khan isn't a huge fan of
the vet. Good luck!

Neither dog is a fan of the vet. But, but are cooperative. Pan less so
than Khan, but she'll do anything for a cookie, and I take the good stuff
for the longer visits. Unfortunately, Khan can't eat until after the vet
visit, so no food for either of them.

One of the reasons two is my limit with dogs. Primarily though, experience
has taught me that when # of dogs # hands, life becomes complicated.
