Default Night barking and whining help!

Hi- we have had our dog (23 lb terrier mix) for 2.5 years, adopted at
1.5 years old. She has been a perfect dog, sweet and lovable and very
friendly. She is in good health, great appetite, playful, etc. No
pee/poo problems. For the last 2 weeks, she will bark and whine at
night (midnight, 3 AM, etc). She has free run of the house and may
sleep in our bed or our son's bed. When I check on her, she is
usually in the kitchen. I usually take her out for a quick pee, but
then she continues to bark. I have tried putting her in our bed and
petting her, but she keeps whining and sometimes shaking. I need to be
at work early, so I have resorted to putting her in our (nice
finished) basement (with dog bed and comfy couches) and closing the
door. After 5 min or so, she is quiet. Acts perfectly normal in the
morning. I am wondering if I should just put her to bed in the
basement after her last walk or is there something else I should be
doing ? Thanks

I'd be checking for evidence of rodents.

Good idea. That means the cats aren't doing their jobs

It also could be that you have critters outside, but near the house.
We have a huge problem with raccoons and just found out the neighbor
is leaving cat food out for neighborhood cats.

Lots of things are feasting on that cat food, possibly including the
dead rat we found between out houses.

We are not amused.

Yep, I agree. It sounds like rodents or critters. My sheltie would fuss up
like that if the raccoons were "shopping" on our porch. And Kiba is
starting to nose the floor, smelling mice trails, I think. As it gets
colder, the pests tend to move indoors, or at least closer to a more
reliable food supply. Damn them...

Is it possible that she may be barking at the cats? Does she get along
with them? My dog sleeps in his kennel at night but we have two free
roaming cats that sometimes plop themselves down right in front of his
kennel and it irritates him enough to where he will sometimes whine or
bark. The mouse or critter suggestion sounds like a good possibility
too.
