Our vet's office won't even let me put the dogs in a down-stay and
take my
hands off their leash when I'm signing the CC slip. *Even when there
are no
other dogs, cats or people around. *I can understand why, since they
don't
know my dogs as well as I do, and clearly have no idea how likely they
are
to hold that stay.

I've never been told to hang onto the leash, but I've never let go of
it, either. *I'm only dealing with one dog, so I just write one-handed.
I noticed yesterday, though, that the new vet has a clip thingy mounted
on the wall next to the pay counter, just for attaching leashes to.

what i hate at my vet is when folks have flexi leashes and let their
little dogs go ALL OVER the waiting room.

I think there may be more to it than that. Even if the office staff is
perfectly well aware that your dogs are 100% reliable on down stays,
if others see you with your hands off the leash they will follow suit
- regardless of whether their dogs have had any training whatsoever.
Guaranteed.

Those of us who are responsible dog owners - no matter how well-trained
our dogs are - MUST set a good example for all the maroons out there at
all times.

Not as much as their out of control dogs annoy me!

I *have* been asked if my dogs would eat their little dog. At the dog park.
It didn't help when I told them that my dogs prefer to eat babies or that
they have eaten enough little dogs for the day that they're not hungry at
the moment.

I think an argument might be able to be made for
it setting a bad precedent with idiots whose dogs are not
under control and who think that leashes are for weenies,
but that's another subject entirely!

That's the big problem. My dog are damnnearperfect offleash,
but I go by the rules of the facility where we hold our agility
trials.

It's perception - Hey! Friday's off-leash, so I'll let Fido off,
too. Then Cujo, then cattle-chasers, then horse-chasers, then
we lose the facility.

Of course not! Those little ones might choke yours going down.

Scully is the least worrisome of my three in the vet's waiting room.
When we walk through the door she immediately develops tunnel vision,
completely ignoring other dogs, people and the office cats and proceeds
directly to the aquarium. She takes the seat to the immediate left of
the tank, I take the seat next to her and she presses her nose to the
glass and watches the fish until it's time to go to the exam room.

I suspect the aquarium is intended to be calming to pet owners, but it
does a great job on Scully, too. On one visit she was visibly upset to
find a man sitting in her favorite chair with his cat in a crate on his
lap. She looked at me, at him, whining and fidgeting. He asked what
was wrong with her and I apologized and explained that she always wants
to watch the fish and that he was sitting in her favorite chair. He
laughed, moved down a couple of seats. She took up her station and
became immediately oblivious to the rest of her surroundings.

She loves the giant fish tank at the BassPro Shop, too. She's obsessed
with the big albino catfish and will move up and down the length of the
tank until she locates him. If he's holed up under a rock she'll
eventually shift her attention to other fish, but he's obviously her
favorite.
