Emmett gets that kind of height, although you're probably
taller than I am so scale appropriately.

I think the kennel staff were somewhat alarmed when I
started jumping up and down, too, when I saw the dogs, but
they looked away and didn't say anything.

Good Lord, what would it take to educate you about them at this point.
A brick over the head?

Dianne,
I got involved with Peta from it's inception and in my opinion they do
some good things. They are no longer credible in my opinion due to the
stupid stunts they pull just to get media attention. Other groups rake
in the cash without having to sink to such depths.
I am on their action alert e-mail list. Recently I received a
personal e-mail to me asking me to check out a suspected puppy mill
about 30 miles from me. The cruelty investigator that contacted me
explained that they had been in touch with our local animal contol and
that animal control replied 'we are working with them". (the puppy
millers)
I should have been more clear when I said "supported them" I no longer
support them financially and haven't since they called me at home
soliciting funds and wanted my CC number.
This month my paltry income is going to be shared with Pet- Abuse.com
and to a little girl's family. She was killed trying to get her kitten
out of the road while she was waiting for the school bus. Her name is
Tindell, she lived in Panama City and I read about her in the newspaper.
Her family wants to put up roadside signs marking the speed limit.
She'd had a number of eye surgeries in her short life just to be able to
see.
Back to Peta, Ingrid is so full of herself. Most of the people that
work there work for a pittance and are dedicated. I will continue to
support them (spiritually and physically) for the good things they do.
There is seldom anyone or any group that I like every single thing about
them or agree with all they do.
I cry for the millions of unwanted animal that die every year. The
fact that Peta killed 6,000 plus means nothing to me. What does it
matter who kills them when the fact is that millions are going to die?
Are you outraged because they are trying to eliminate Pit Bulls? I
just took in another Pit Bull mix that someone dumped at my fence. She
is about 4 months old and her name is Chica. My pack now consists of 3
PBT mixes and a Border Collie mix. Before Peta manages to eliminate
every last one of them they build dog houses for them, supply straw and
have a spay and neuter clinic in Norfolk.
You can rest easy none of my big bucks are going to support them.
I just paticipated in a rally at the courthouse in the Panhandle. Two
men are accused of beating a kitten to death with a sledge hammer. We
plan to appear at every courthouse appearance to give that kitten a
voice. We have had overwhelming support. I asked the other members in
our group if they wanted me to attempt to solicit support from well
known animal groups. The answer was overwhelmingly NO to Peta.

Is it the killing of animals or the debasement of women that makes you
support them?

Shelly,
I don't think Peta debases women. It is the women themselves. I
think it is lowdown and cheap of Peta to have such campaigns but they
aren't forcing anyone to do it. There are some women that take their
clothes off and don't even have an agenda. Scantily clad women drape
themselves over everything from refrigerators to cars because sex sells.
Peta will do just about anything for media attention. I liked their
antics better when they first began.

No. I am outraged because their ultimate goal is to eliminate ALL
DOMESTICATED ANIMALS. And it really doesn't take much in terms of
reading between the lines and doing a little critical thinking to
see it.

Coincidentally there was recently a discussion about PETA on a blog I
sometimes frequent. I found these passages to be relevant to this
discussion:

Ingrid Newkirk has had a number of things to say about pets, The interview
in Harpers back in Aug 1988 pretty well sums it up-

"Pet ownership is an absolutely abysmal situation brought about by human
manipulation."

and

See Newkirk's Newsday Feb 1988 quote:

"In the end, I think it would be lovely if we stopped this whole notion of
pets altogether."

Exactly. And if they succeed in outlawing pets, and succeed in forcing
veganism on everyone, then all domesticated animals will go extinct. QED.
