Default Questions to ask adopters

It has come to the point where Gen and I need to find another home for
Moogli. While nothing bad has happened yet, his attitude towards Emilie and
Sofia is going downhill pretty quick. Physical problems have been
eliminated, as he had an annual checkup not too long ago.

If it was just me, or just Gen and I, I would have no problems working to
try to regulate the situation. Throw Emilie and Sofia into the situation,
and I no longer have that luxury. Gen has stated, in no uncertain terms,
that either I find a home, or he goes to the local SPCA.

Thus, it has come to the point where I have to make the decision of what
home do I send Moogli to. For those of you that do rescue home-visits, what
questions should I be asking.

Thanks.

And to keep myself in somewhat good mood, there are some pics of Emilie and
Sofia here :http://picasaweb.google.ca/marcel.beaudoin

I'm sure you've already asked all your friends and family? Have they
put the word out?

Yup. I have asked them, but none of them are interested in taking him.

I can't imagine anyone not wanting Moogli. He's not my type of dog. If i
had some sort of forever vet bill insurance in place for him, I'd ask for him
in a heartbeat

None of them are really dog-people. A couple of them gave away their dogs
because they didn't want to have to walk them twice a day because they
lived in an apartment.

Oh my gosh. I wouldn't want them to have such a privilege as to own Moogli.
Speaking of which, have you heard from The Dimpled Chad lately, and know how
Frankie is doing?

Nope. I have fired off an email to his last email address, but haven't
heard anything at all.

I'm sorry to hear this, Marcel.

The questions you ask should be specifically geared towards finding out just
how likely it is that they will work out for Moogli long term. Since you
know the dog well, you should make up a list of behaviors/concerns you have
that would most likely end up in having him returned, and find out whether
someone has dealt with those issues and if not, how they would set about to
address it.

Other stuff is general, ones that will let you know if they are able/willing
to take care of a dog. My usual set starts off with asking about the
family's daily routine, and how a dog would fit into that routine. How
often will he be walked/fed/groomed? Are they willing to obedience train
the dog? If so, do they have a trainer in mind? Ask a few questions
regarding training and how much experience they have with training dogs.
Find out about prior dog experience, and what happened to those dogs. Ask
for personal/vet references and follow-up on those. Ask to see in person
where the dog will be living - that way you can address any potential issues
you see (people being careless with chemicals, dog that has proclivity
towards chewing electrical cords, etc.).

Anyone taking the dog from you should sign a contract agreeing to return the
dog to you should things not work out. Ask for a rehoming fee (as a kook
deterrent in part), and if that sits better with you, have the funds go to
the local SPCA. Keep an eye on your local Craigslist or some such to make
sure that whoever is getting him won't be turning him around for a profit
(it's been known to happen).

Good luck,

Suja

Meant to add this. Unless his annual checkup included a complete blood
panel (CBC, SuperChem, full Thyroid profile), I would get that done before
placing him anywhere.

I guess, since we can't offer Moogli a home, we'd be asking about the
previous experience that people have had with dogs. That will tell you
a lot. Do not ask questions that can be answered yes/no.

This just breaks my heart. Are you willing to ship him? Maybe we can
find someone wonderful here...
