I have been reading a lot of negative articles on Iams. I wonder if
that food caused my dog to get sick. I also had negative experiences with Science Diet the one precribed for senior dogs. http://www.iamscruelty.com/ What commercial dog foods do you recommend. Meteore |

It's not a great food but I'd be very, very surprised indeed if it were responsible for your dog's diabetes. You'll note that the anti-Iams sites tend to focus on the way Iams does testing and not on the food itself. I also had negative experiences with Science Diet the one precribed for senior dogs. Now there's something that doesn't surprise me. But what do you mean by "negative experience?" What commercial dog foods do you recommend. There's a variety of pretty good feeds out there, and different dogs do better on different ones. If you've got access to a locally-owned feed shop run by grownups, go talk to the people there about your concerns, what you're looking for, etc. Forget Petsmart, Petco, and the other chain stores. The people who work there mean well but typically don't know much about what they're selling. -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - Prouder than ever to be a member of the reality-based community |

One of them got mange and the other had some kind of skin disease, where she lost hair and had bloody messes all over. |

One of them got mange and the other had some kind of skin disease, where she lost hair and had bloody messes all over. The vet could do nothing for them. Prior to the shitzu, I had a lhasa which also contacted some skin problem. All were on Science diet prescribed for older dogs. I cannot recall the exact name. meteore Reply Reply to author |

If only Chard had eaten a species-appropriate diet of raw meat and scavenged vegetable matter, s/he would not have developed Teh Di-beetus. Or something. http://www.thepaleodiet.com/ The Paleo Diet is a way of eating in the modern age that best mimics the nutrition of our evolutionary and genetic heritage - the ancestral, Paleolithic diet. For millions of years our hunter-gatherer ancestors ate combinations of lean meat, seafood, plants, fruit, and nuts. But today in America, more than 70% of our dietary calories come from foods that our Paleolithic (Stone Age) ancestors rarely if ever ate ... and that modern humans are not genetically adapted to eat. The result is epidemic levels of cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, arthritis, acne, gastrointestinal disease, and more. Since I've been restricting carbs I've lost 30 lbs and glucose levels are now normal most of the time and I've been able to reduce my meds as well. So sorry for your loss and that you had to make the decision. Also, sorry for all the people hijacking your thread. I recently had to put to sleep my 16.5 yr old miniature poodle. |

Hey, beet: I've never restricted carbs (I have a t-shirt that says CHOOSE CARBS, actually) and I've always been thin, always had low-normal blood pressure, always been fitter than most. *My* crackpot theory says that if I'd avoided carbs I'd have ballooned up. I think anecdotes and uninformed guesses about what's going on are *way* better than science! -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - Prouder than ever to be a member of the reality-based community |

I think anecdotes and uninformed guesses about what's going on are *way* better than science! I just can't wrap my mind around the chard's gross lack of critical thinking skills. If your body is diseased, it's not going to act like a healthy body, so why would you evangelize based on how your diseased body acts? I mean, I don't doubt that controlling carbs is important to diabetics. Duh. And I don't doubt that changing her diet and getting her blood sugar levels under control has resulted in weight loss. But that does not mean that eliminating carbs from a healthy person's diet would A) have the same results or B) not be harmful. -- Shelly http://www.cat-sidh.net (the Mother Ship) http://esther.cat-sidh.net (Letters to Esther) |

They're relying on their own observations and anecdotes and their mechanism for integrating other people's observations and anecdotes seems to be to ignore them completely. -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - Prouder than ever to be a member of the reality-based community |
