Default Peanut's most excellent car ride

Peanut finally got the car ride he's been wanting...we drove down to
North Carolina to David's house for Thanksgiving, so he not only got a
long car ride (much longer than I'd have liked...we hit both rush hour
*and* holiday exodus traffic on I-66 [DC-area folks (hi, Suja!) will
know what I mean]) but got to play with Maggie and Buddy as well.

Peanut rides very well in the car...mostly. While the car is moving he
knows he has to stay in the back seat, but doesn't see why that should
apply while we're stopped!

He got to see deer while he was there--three of them ran across David's
yard while he, his boyfriend, and my mother were out on the front porch
with Peanut and the other dogs (I was still asleep). Peanut was all for
chasing after them and apparently planning on running them down, but
cooler (human) heads prevailed.

I would never use a flexi leash at home, but I bought one for use in
David's yard, so that he could run and sniff without me having to keep
up with him quite as much...he is not trained on the invisible fence and
I actually have no intention of trying that. Maggie and Buddy do fine
with it (Maggie is terrified of the beep the collar makes before it does
anything else, and Buddy wouldn't go anywhere anyway) but neither of
them is a beagle, and when Peanut is following a trail the rest of the
world might as well not exist.

The trip home was less stressful than the trip out, except that it
rained all the way. Peanut gets to ride again at Christmas, and I'm
hoping that will hold him for a while!

Next time, put him in a safety harness or a secured crate. Please!
It's for your safety as well as his.

Looks fine from this end.

It sounds like Peanut had a lovely holiday.

Yes, ma'am. We ride so infrequently (like never) that I hadn't invested
in a harness yet...but I will. Does anyone have any recommendations for
something that is good for an 18-lb dog, but not too expensive? Is
there a way he can still look out the window? I saw in a catalog
somewhere a kind of box that was raised up so a small dog could look out
the window, but I can't remember if it was secured or not.

I kind of figured it would be, since I know some other people are using
the same provider (like, for instance, you!).

He did, and so did I.

I had a client with a Yorkie with a lovely car seat for her dog. Raised
with a place to put the seat belt connection through to a harness.
Soft, a view, secure.

I did a little Googling (no personal experience with booster seats),
and the ones I found were either unsecured or did not look well
secured. That may not be a problem if the seat doesn't interfere
with the safety harness and seatbelt. Depending on how big/small
Peanut is, it might be just as easy to put a cushy pillow on the seat
for him.

I kind of figured it would be, since I know some other people are
using the same provider (like, for instance, you!).

Welcome to the Motzarella Club!
