http://www.examiner.com/x-1028-Pet-N...hanks-his-dogs Mickey Rourke wins Best Actor at Golden Globes and thanks his dogs in acceptance speech 277 comments January 11, 11:42 PM by Helena Sung, Pet News Examiner « Previous Mickey Rourke. (AP Photo) Mickey Rourke won the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture-Drama at the Golden Globes this evening for his lead role in The Wrestler. He gave a surprisingly eloquent and heartfelt speech, noting that he is not used to speaking in public and that he was almost "out of the business" (Hollywood) a few years ago. (The critics are calling his speech "interesting.") Rourke thanked his agent, producers, co-stars, etc. and then he asked the audience if he could thank his dogs--both the ones that are still with him now, and those that had passed on. Sometimes when a man's alone, all you got are your dogs and they meant the world to me. --Mickey Rourke, during his acceptance speech for Best Actor at the Golden Globes. I bet nobody's ever thanked their dog before at the Golden Globes, and I admire that Mickey Rourke did. He expressed the immense love and gratitude we feel towards our dogs who give us unconditional love, companionship and loyalty. (Not to mention regular laughs.) Honestly, I hadn't planned on seeing The Wrestler, but since Rourke just won for Best Actor and Bruce Springsteen (who wrote the theme song for the movie) won for Best Song, I am definitely going to see it. Below, watch video of Mickey Rourke at the Venice Film Festival last year. He brought his 16 year-old Chihuahua terrier mix, Loki with him onto the red carpet. "My dog is very old, she is 16 and she is not going to be around for long so I want to spend every moment with her," he told Reuters. One reporter wrote that Rourke brought Loki with him to a press interview at the Chateau Marmont and asked the waitress (nicely) for a little bowl of water for his dog. According to another report by contactmusic.com, Rourke's pet Chihuahua, Beau Jack, passed away in 2002. Rourke is quoted as saying, "I gave him mouth-to-mouth for 45 minutes before they peeled me off. Depressed? He died at my home, and I didn't go back for two weeks." Loki is the daughter of Beau Jack. Rourke now owns seven chihuahuas. Rourke has been quoted as saying about Loki: She’s like a giant Xanax, you know? I’m not going to get religious on your ass, but I truly believe God created dogs for a cause. They are the greatest companions a man could ever have. Yes, we do know, Mickey. Congratulations on your win. |

Congratulations on your win. ------- i think that was cool, what he did. and he is right. during one of the lowest points in my life, i feel that my dogs saved me, because i had to take them out and care for them. i had to do something for someone other than myself, and it forced me to get up when i'd have rather slept and moved when i'd have rather stopped. the love of a good pet is sometimes all you have, and when you have nothing and everyone thinks you are a loser, your pets are part of team you. -- adonline |

I thought he was crude and gross looking. I'm not
talking about his face but that greasy hair over his eyes. |

There was only one other person present, and before I even recognized the face I registered the single only instance of palpable magnetism I have ever experienced. I was almost jolted by the presence this person exuded, who was of course, Mickey Rourke. Never really liked him in anything he's done and don't think much of the choices he's made, but I never believed in what people call "star quality" until that day I ran into him, and I've met a number of performers over the years. He reminds me of Russell Crowe plugged into a 220V outlet. (Unfortunately, his brain appears to be wired for 110.) And it ain't like Crowe is short of mindblowing charisma. |

Mez I know you've rubbed shoulders with plenty of stars so I respect your comments on him. I just think he needs a stylist and to brush up on his speaking skills...I don't think he needs to say "balls" on national TV . Needs to show more respect for his audience which includes young people. |

Anyway I am a Mickey Rourke fan and am glad to see he made a comeback. I found his acceptance speech and his fondness for his dogs very appealing. Be Free.....Judy |

He was on Jay Leno this evening and he seems like a pretty good guy. Admittedly messed up and "crazy", but aren't we all, to some extent. I think at least he has a handle on his problems and genuinely cares about some deep issues. It goes much further than his rough looking exterior. Paul and Muttley |

I haven't seen Mr. Rourke for a long time, and didn't watch the Globes, but friends did and were universal in their opinion that he appeared "dirty and greasy-looking" appearance-wise. This is a cat oriented ng but as long as we're talking dogs here....I had one dog and it is entirely different from cat slavery, truly. He lived to please me. As that old joke goes, "Dogs come when you call. Cats say, "I'll get back to you". |
