Brooke's Story

Hi friends,

My name is Brooke and have I got a story to tell you!

I am an adorable 7-month old German shepherd who was found wandering
the highway with my 2 siblings.

We were brought to the shelter, and boy, was I a mess!! Skinny, sores
all over my body, and almost no fur!!

Thankfully my big brown eyes and great big ears caught the attention
of the wonderful rescue group, and all 3 of us were taken into foster
care. My sister and brother already got adopted – I am so jealous!!

But maybe it is better that I haven't been adopted yet, because I need
some extra help. You see, my foster mom noticed that after playing
chase with my new dog friends, I have a slight limp.

I got some x-rays and found out I have something called ununited
anaconeal process – a fancy way of saying elbow dysplasia. I've got an
unjoined bit of bone in my elbow and I need surgery pretty quickly
before I become permanently disabled. With the surgery I've got a
great chance of running and jumping for a very long time. Without the
surgery I will most likely lead a short, painful life and will die
while I'm still a young girl. I could really use some help paying for
this surgery! I love to play tug and race around the yard but I've got
to get this elbow fixed if I'm ever going to catch the other dogs. My
hair has grown back, I'm gaining weight, and I look fabulous – now I
just need this one more thing taken care of and then I'm ready for my
new home.

Will you help?

About AGSR (Austin German Shepherd Rescue)

Mission: To rescue, rehabilitate, and re-home German Shepherds from
across the state of Texas. To educate the public about the versatility
and ability of the German Shepherd Dog.
AGSR is a A 501-3(c) non-profit, 100% volunteer organization.
Donations may be tax deductible.

AGSR rescues German Shepherds from all over the state of Texas (as
well as a few other states). AGSR has no endowment or steady income
stream other than income provided by donations and adoptions. The
manpower for this organization is 100% volunteer.

Please consider donating to Brooke's cause. Her surgery (at reduced
pricing) will likely be in the neighborhood of $1500. For every dog
that is rescued and brought back to full health, there are so many
more waiting in shelters and discarded by previous owners. Helping
AGSR with caring for these dogs not only helps this individual dog,
but helps to provide the financial resources so that additional pets
can be rescued and put into loving homes.

Is anyone else getting email about AGSR Rescue and Brooke the GSD? I've
received one message, supposedly from Karla McDaniel, and then another
via deadfake.com, that is supposedly from Elegy. The weird thing is
that both messages went to an account I stopped using in my reply-to
about a year ago.

Yeah, and I did some poking around. The organization
actually refers to itself as AGSDR, which is the first big
clue that something's not right. But anyway, if you go to
the page to make a donation you'll see that there's
absolutely no evidence that it's actually associated with
AGSDR. If you go to the AGSDR web page, you'll find that
they did have a dog named Brooke who needed surgery three
years ago, and the dog has since recovered and been adopted.

Once I get the dogs fed and more caffeine into me I'm
sending the whole thing to the attorney general for my
state. You might want to do the same with yours.

A-ha! It does seem to be a scam, then. What a pain in the ass.

I just looked up internet fraud on our AG's website, and it says to
contact the FBI, but gives a link to a page that does not exist. Not so
helpful.

yeah, I got it too. They obviously got names off Usenet. Nancy Holmes
was on the distribution list too (only noticed because she responded
with "take me off this list"). They're using OLD Usenet addresses!
Come to think of it, I don't know what address mine came to (everything
comes to one location). I'm betting it's my old aol address.

Okay, I emailed AGSDR, just to give them a head's up that their group is
apparently being used in a scam. (And if it's not actually a scam, then
they might want to change how they go about soliciting money, because
they're coming off as awfully shady.)

The message from "Karla" had at least 100 people in the cc list.

Nancy Holmes
was on the distribution list too (only noticed because she responded
with "take me off this list").

Sent to the whole list, apparently? Good grief! At least she's alive
and well. I have occasionally wondered.

Yup, and I recognised many other addresses on the distribution
list - including an old regular who responded to *everyone*,
telling us to take her off our distribution lists.

The weird thing is that both
messages went to an account I stopped using in my reply-to
about a year ago.

Mine came to a recycled address that I originally stopped using
6 years ago but started using again 20 months ago.

I didn't see that one, so I must've gotten a mass mailing.

I think it's kind of funny that they (or whoever they got their lists
from) harvested old addresses, instead of newer ones that are more
likely to be live. Doesn't seem like a very effective way to rake in
the scam bucks.
