Default Wheaton terrier or Tibetan terrier/ which one for me???

Hi,

I have researched the web on health issues and temperament for both
dogs and am familiar with the good and bad of both. I do not know any
owners of these breeds and the vet won't allow me to call any of their
clents.

I am a youthful and healthy 71, as I still indulge in sports that are
for younger people. Exercising dog would be no problem.

I am looking for a dog that has a marvellous disposition, gentle,
loving, intelligent and energetic etc.

I would like to hear from Tibetan or Wheaton terrier owners about
their own good and bad personal experiences
with these breeds and if you live in the Montreal area a
recommendation for a breeder.

I want to be able to leave the dog in the house, should I go out for a
few hours and not come back to some unpleasant surprises. I
previously had a Lhasa Apso, but I am looking for a dog that can take
the Montreal winters with gusto.

I live in the Montreal area and these breeds are rare when it comes to
rescue agencies so I am forced to buy a puppy.

Kindly advise.

I find this really odd. I can understand your
vet not just handing out clients' phone
numbers, but I can't believe they wouldn't be
willing to at least contact those other
owners and offer them YOUR number.

Um. Yes it would.

I'm sorry, but at 71 (even a verrrrry
youthful 71), both of those breed are a LOT
of dog for you.

They are extremely active. Wheatons in
particular (IME) can get snarky, barky, and
obnoxious if not given proper outlets and
consistent training. These are fairly high
energy dogs. People thnk they know what that
means....until they are in over their heads.

This has everything to do with training, and
very little to do with breed. A trained dog
of any common breed that I can think of
should be able to do this without a problem.

Thanks for providing what breed you've had
experience with in the past. It helps get an
idea of where you're coming from.

My opinion (which is regional to the NY area)
is that while you may not be going from the
frying pan into the fire, you are certainly
considering going from the frying pan into a
preheated open air grill :-)

Not if you pick another breed :-)

I'm still processing coffee, but I will
ponder this a bit.

In the meantime, what outdoor activities do
you want your dog to be able to participate
in? That's a major factor, as is how much
time every day are you able and willing to
put into their daily routine.

One way to get to know a certain breed is to attend
conformation, obedience, or working trials. You can make some
contacts and talk to people very familiar to the breed.

Go to http://www.ckc.ca - CKC Services - Calendar of Events

Being a large city, you should be able to find something in the
Montreal area.
