I have a Corgi and Lab/Rott mix. They are happier if I feed them lightly in
the morning, then the bigger main feed in the evening. My wife says I should feed them once a day. But, in the mornings, it's hard not to when they come in and put their heads in your lap, or just start with that woooo wooooo boooo boooo wooooooooo singsong that sounds like yodeling. "Yah wanna eat?", and they are dancing down the hall to the laundry room and their dishes. What's the consensus on this? Steve |

Half of their kibble, plus either water or whey, if I've been making yogurt, in the am, the other half of the kibble plus veggies in the evening. They wake up hungry in the morning, I give them their breakfast when I eat mine. None of the humans are home at lunch time. I fix supper for everybody in the evening, the dogs get their share of whatever veggies I fix for the humans, plus their kibble, everybody goes to bed with a full tummy. Is your wife awake at the early morning feeding time? Has she tried to eat while being watched by dogs whose stomachs are audibly growling? Yeah, dogs can get by on once daily feedings. But they shouldn't have to, not if there's somebody around who doesn't mind serving them breakfast then letting them out to potty. |

Steve FWIW, we feed twice a day, morning and evening, about equal amounts (puppies got 4x, then 3x/day). I'm not sure you can judge the frequency of needed feedings by the dogs' reactions. Oppie (Lab) would turn most likely pretzel himself in delight at each meal if we fed him 10x/day. Your dogs have learned that heads in lap or yodeling are often (always?) reinforced by a feeding. My brother feeds once a day because his dogs just don't eat in the morning. Suja I feed 2x/day and my dogs would eat a meal pretty much whenever food is offered! I think they utilize calories better and there are some behavioral benefits as well. -- Janet Boss www.bestfriendsdogobedience.com |

SteveB wrote: What's the consensus on this? I don't know if there's consensus, but here's my take - it's a lot easier on the dog to feed twice a day. I prefer bigger meals in the morning, because in the unlikely event of problem everybody (that's me!) is up and about. In general, the more the dog eats the more often it should be fed. A big whopping meal is more likely to cause diarrhea, and it's just a lot easier on the dog's digestive system to eat smaller meals more often. As I said, I go with twice a day in almost all cases. -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - Prouder than ever to be a member of the reality-based community |

When I feed them, I put canned food and some broth, and since it's a small portion, they almost polish the bowls. So, I do think it's preference rather than hunger that they will eat in the mornings. FWIW, I usually feed 3x per day. Occasionally I add a 4th meal. Sometimes that extra meal is split from one of her other meals, but other times it's on top of her normal daily total of kibble. My dog is weird. She horks up mucous when she goes too long without eating, and what constitutes "too long" has decreased over time. So, we went from 2x/day to 3x/day and now I guess we may be on the way to 4x/day. It's also possible that a recent food change is responsible for the also-recent horking. Time will tell. I only mention it because for this dog, at least, how much she eats and how often she needs to eat are dependent on a whole lotta stuff. That said, I can't imagine feeding a dog just once a day. I know some people do, but I wouldn't, without a really good reason. But you don't mention how much you feed at a time, probably for good reason. I've heard you starve your dog because you can't control what you personally eat. http://web.archive.org/web/200607211...e/Wshelly2.jpg |
