Hi all,
I've been looking at getting a bugg (boston terrier/pug cross) but I've been told this cross breed needs more attention than I can give it. This sounds a little hokey to me. I'm a single guy who works full time so five days out of the week I'm out of the house for 8 hours. I can provide a dog-sitter for the first month or so. I can provide lots of stimulating doggie toys in a reasonably sized exercise pen. Can anyone tell me if I'm being fed a load of horse hockey or is this really a legitimate concern? |

A "Bugg" isn't really a breed in that what you get when you crossbreed two dogs is pretty much of a crapshoot. You might get a dog that looks like a Boston and behaves like a Pug, a dog that looks like a Pug and behaves like a Boston, both, neither, etc. It takes a few (!!) generations to fix breed characteristics well enough for a breeding to produce predictable outcomes. Dogs need a certain amount of attention, and none of them will do well with none. None needs constant attention. You can improve the chances of things going well by getting an adult dog that's been housetrained, etc., and trying to be realistic about what you can do versus what the dog needs. I'd guess that most people who have dogs work outside the home, so obviously it can be done with great success. If it were me I'd stay far, far away from the "Bugg" thing, though. -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - Prouder than ever to be a member of the reality-based community |

Will it be a puppy or an adult? Does the 8 hours include travel time? I'm assumimg a dog sitter is someone who stays for most of the day. It might be cheaper to hire a dog walker long term. Alison |
