"kat" wrote in message net... "Phyrie" wrote in message ... "kat" wrote in message net... Well I took the advice and kept Shadow & Remi outside as long as possible and then we all went inside. Shadow is having nothing to do with her. He growls whenever she comes near him. Of course she is enamored of him and stops whatever she is doing to watch him intently when he is in her vicinity! Is there something else we could be doing to get her to sleep through the night or is she just too young yet (7 weeks today). We did the alarm clock/stuffed toy/lots of exercise thing. I feel like we have a newborn again ![]() Kathy She IS an infant. I am a firm believer of bringing home older puppies. If there is no dire reason to bring home such a young dog, I would have left her with her mother and siblings for another four-five weeks. They just learn so much from their mother about how to be a good dog. Once an "older" puppy (hell, at 11-12 weeks they are hardly "old") comes home, it's easier for you to teach her to be a good citizen, since she's already got a solid foundation as a good dog. It was an accidental litter. The people had already sent her brother to a new home and wanted to get rid of the others as soon as possiible. They had four adult dogs and the litter (8) all kenneled in the garage as it was really cold here in MI at the time. There were only two females and my husband wanted this female. If we didn't take her there was already another person who wanted her. They were basically giving the puppies away they were selling them so cheaply. Kathy But if you had paid for her, so she was yours, wouldn't they have let the puppy stay with the bitch for a few more weeks? I know the point is moot, but if you had offered to pay for her keep, I can't see a good reason why they wouldn't have let you leave her there for a month or two. What could it cost to keep a still-nursing puppy? Or even if the bitch had weaned her (probably not at six weeks), it still wouldn't be much to feed her for a little while. The benefits outweigh the joys of early puppyhood, IMHO. Phyrie |

Sounds like the puppy was MUCH better off outta there! -- Janet Boss www.bestfriendsdogobedience.com |

I was thinking of the puppy raising being done by the bitch, not the humans, and should have taken that more into consideration. But I did get the impression from the OP that these people are breeders of GSPs who had an "oops". So they should know what they're doing, if they're trying to be responsible breeders and simply had an accident. Phyrie |

Keeping a litter in a garage in winter in MI tells me a lot (unless it is a fancy, schmancy heated garage). -- Janet Boss www.bestfriendsdogobedience.com |

Sorry, ignorant Canadian here.... (when did Google become a verb??) I had a look at WeatherMichigan.com. It's freakin' warmer there than here right now!! It's SNOWING today. This is just unheard of. This is the coldest, longest winter I've ever experienced here on the BC coast. I am SO looking forward to Arizona in two weeks. Phyrie |

We have had - temps and currently we're experiencing days in the 60's (F). It won't last long, but it sure is nice right now! I have a bit of spring fever and I truly do not want to go back to cccccccoooooooold and snow and ice. A trace of ice remains in some areas of my yard, despite these temps. -- Janet Boss www.bestfriendsdogobedience.com |

We're going through a warm spot right now but according to our friends at NOAA's Climate Prediction Center there's a ~40% chance temperatures will be below average next week and beyond. http://www.cpc.noaa.gov/ -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - Prouder than ever to be a member of the reality-based community |

Phyrie Right now we are in an heat wave, my city has seen record temps the last two days. So, don't think the current temperature is typical MI winter. Just last week we were in single digits(F) ~-15 C I believe, my Celsius is rusty. Nick |

We're at 5 C. today, which is 41 F., which is damn cold to me. Did I mention it SNOWED here yesterday?? It didn't stick, but still... *sheesh*!! -- Phyrie Kiba the Cav's Pics: http://www.flickr.com/photos/phyrie/...758930/detail/ |

Keeping a litter in the garage because its too cold to keep them outside is NOT a place where that puppy would have learned anything productive during the remaining weeks. Better to get the puppies into loving homes so they can actually start being socialized to the home. |
