Well I took the advice and kept Shadow & Remi outside as long as possible
and then we all went inside. Shadow is having nothing to do with her. He
growls whenever she comes near him. Of course she is enamored of him and
stops whatever she is doing to watch him intently when he is in her
vicinity!

Is there something else we could be doing to get her to sleep through the
night or is she just too young yet (7 weeks today). We did the alarm
clock/stuffed toy/lots of exercise thing. I feel like we have a newborn
again

What does she do when Shadow growls? It took grumpy Friday a
year before he played with baby Maybe, even though she spoke dog
well. Old guy Rocky, OTOH, played well with her from the
beginning.

If Shadow only growls (and probably does the lip-lifting thing)
while Remi is puppying, I'd leave them to sort it - naturally
with supervision.

She's too young to make it through the night without a pee break
(it's always at 2am). I'd avoid putting stuff into her bed at
night - nights are for sleeping. I know that the alarm clock
and toys are meant as litter/mom substitutions, but that's your
job now. If you're crating her at night, where is she?

With Gabby I put in a stuffed animal the same size as her littermates. She
would lay down with her head on it and go right to sleep then.

She IS an infant. I am a firm believer of bringing home older puppies. If
there is no dire reason to bring home such a young dog, I would have left
her with her mother and siblings for another four-five weeks. They just
learn so much from their mother about how to be a good dog. Once an "older"
puppy (hell, at 11-12 weeks they are hardly "old") comes home, it's easier
for you to teach her to be a good citizen, since she's already got a solid
foundation as a good dog.

But that's not helpful in your case, I know. So, you're right, she's a
newborn, and you will have to treat her as such, at least for a few months.

She's a GSP? Most of my retriever pups have slept through the night
from night one, at 8 weeks. Marcie took about a week, but I think some
of that was adjustment to a new crate and preventing her from eating
Rudy's fur (we'd have middle of the night hairball barf).

Sometimes she backs up, sometimes she starts barking at him but she always

Sometimes he surprises me and allows her to be near him without a fuss - as
long as she isn't too close. For now he can jump on the furniture to get
away from her.

Yep she's crated in our bedroom.

It was an accidental litter. The people had already sent her brother to a
new home and wanted to get rid of the others as soon as possiible. They had
four adult dogs and the litter (8) all kenneled in the garage as it was
really cold here in MI at the time. There were only two females and my
husband wanted this female. If we didn't take her there was already another
person who wanted her. They were basically giving the puppies away they
were selling them so cheaply.

My youngest daughter is a hairdresser and she found a small stuffed hair
dryer (who would have thought?) so she had to get it for her. That is the
one that stays in her crate. She has different ones in the house that she
plays with. I'm not really sure if she plays with that one in her crate or
just sleeps on it. It doesn't sound like she is playing with it but I'm not
about to turn on the light to find out if she is being quiet lol.

Good maybe we only have another week or two! She was 7 weeks on Sunday.

Keep with the supervision then, even though it's probably just
them getting used to each other.

At 7 weeks, that's understandable. It's great that she's
letting you know.

She now goes back to sleep pretty quickly without all the
initial yelping (10-20 minutes) that she did each time she
was put back in the crate. Unlike DH and I who frequently

Mine have had full night time freedom from about the 12 to 16
week point (Maybe was early, Rocky was late) but they stopped
waking me up at about the 12 week point.

Like you, I was once a bad sleeper - once awake, I couldn't
sleep again. Rocky the puppy cured me of that.
