Since frequenting some of the pet groups I've learned that the thinking on
vaccination schedules has changed. I'm wondering what those here think of the usual puppy vaccination schedule (8, 12, 16, etc.) Do most still follow that or do they wait until they are older and do less frequent vaccinations? Kathy |

Puppy vaccinations are extremely important, some more than others depending upon your habits and your location. Things that adult dogs can handle sometimes kill young dogs. Talk to your vet about your concerns - he's your best source and hopefully won't dismiss your concerns out-of-hand. -- --Matt. Rocky's a Dog. |

According to the handout I got they recommend the traditional schedule but if the dog was 16 weeks then it was a series of 2 shots. We didn't discuss the vaccines as it was a last minute visit (not with the vet I plan on taking her to but another one in the same practice). I had dropped off a stool sample and they wanted to see her before they would dispense medication. I've seen posts (and also someone I know) who's puppies had seizures and/or allergic reactions to vaccinations and I was wondering if waiting until the puppy was a little older might prevent that. I will discuss it but based on past experience I'm sure they will recommend the traditional series. I just wanted to explore different avenues but of course I don't want to put Remi's health at risk. Kathy Kiba had the usual puppy series, sans lepto. I changed vets over the lepto. The first vet only had a combo vaccine and wouldn't order any without for us. We won't vaccinate again, unless something changes. Kiba has had two yearly rabies vacs, but we won't do a yearly again. My vet and I feel that a three year rabies is fine, unless we have to travel with Kiba, then we will do whatever the law says we must. He is current with bordatella (sp?) because I board him at day care occasionally, and it's required by them. Phyrie |

Tell that to the schmuck that said, "Do you have any idea how expensive it would be to order a case of vaccine just for you? We give lepto to all puppies, and we've never had a problem." There was more than one reason to drop that vet, but that finished it for me. Phyrie |
