Janet Boss spoke these words of wisdom
in : I feel about the same way about snowmobiles as I do about jetskis - a lot of idiots seem to be out on them, and I just don't think I want to join them! I have been on them. When necessary for emergencies (Blizzard of 78-79) And it was ok. But an ATV is a lot more practical every day (used in cutting down trees, moving logs, relocating wagons of chopped wood, gardening, hunting/trapping, excercising dogs, snow blowing driveways, and when used for play, a lot more versatile (12 months of the year) and just as thrilling. We only use our ATV only in authorized areas. It seems most snowmobile activity is done illegally on public roads, through trespassing in farmer's fields, and often used to harrass livestock by the trespassing interlopers. It seems MOST snowmobilers are self centered thrill seeking, trespassing asses. I've hated them ever since I got a puppy back in winter of 1982, and was standing on a street corner n town (at that time, my property) and had a postage stamp yard. I took my brand new doberman puppy outside to potty. It was bitterly cold. So I stood behind a pine tree to break the wind, while waiting for him to do his thing on a 30 foot line. The snowmobiler did not see me, but he ran down my puppy and killed it. After that, I strung a cable throat high to a snowmobile and painted it white all around my yard. It didn't bring my puppy back, but it did stop the snowmobile tresspassing in the town yard. I hate them. I hate them all. Having cattle gards kept the horses in, but it allowed snowmobilers to access and chase them as well. I had to put up a gate. Snomobilers seem to have no common sense. I hope they all darwin themselves in their stupidity. I really do. |

I expect so. There are a lot of ways to enjoy winter, and watching people from out-of-town come up here for school, the ones who don't adapt get pretty miserable pretty quickly. I'm just not really a hard-winter person and never will be. Winters get very cold here in MO (we're 5b, which is the same zone as a lot of the NE), though of course not as bad as up north (though a friend who moved here recently from Idaho thinks our winters are *brutal* because the moisture and wind make everything so much worse). And as an original KY girl, where temps were rarely cold long enough to freeze the cattle pond enough for us to be safe on, I simply do NOT like cold. I can deal fine down into the 30s, but beyond that I just don't like it, especially the wind. I deal, and I'm better than I used to be. But I'm not at all interested in skiing, skating or ice fishing, hate snowmobiles, hate having to put on 16 things to go to the mailbox. I like nekkid dogs too, who can't stay out for long periods. Not really interested in mushing mostly because I'm not a huge fan of Northen breeds. I love to watch it. But do it? No. I think snow is beautiful, especially if you can sit inside by the fire. But I hate feeling trapped indoors, and chipping the car out repeatedly gets boring as hell. So no, not a winter person. |

: How horrible. Why not blaze orange cable though? That would make it harder to decapitate the snowmobiler, silly! Seriously, though, she's lucky she *didn't* kill someone. As annoying as snowmobiles may be, people shouldn't be murdered for using them. -- Shelly http://www.cat-sidh.net |

(I've personally witnessed drivers of cars deliberately hitting animals, including my childhood cat, so it unfortunately wouldn't surprise me to hear a snowmobiler did the same.) Having cattle gards kept the horses in, but it allowed snowmobilers to access and chase them as well. Sounds like the same mentality as 90% the off-road bikers (motorbikes) and ATV'ers I've encountered. :-P |

While I love some snow, especially one really good storm, I would not want big storm after big storm after big storm. But you don't know what your life would be like if you had moved. You may have turned into a snow bunny, taking up showshoeing or snowmobiling or mushing or cross-country skiing or something that would make you really love constant snow. I just snowshoed for my first time a few weeks ago. It was a surprising amount of fun! But it was Colorado snow, which I understand is not only bizarrely fluffy, but happens under MUCH milder conditions. A friend just left his property in NY up near the Canadian border. crazy "below zero" temps. Even his dogs looked at him like he was crazy for going out. I'd have to wrap Annie insaran, newspapers and 3 layers of clothing. And then we'd both just be too embarrassed to walk anywhere. |

Both diddy's story and yours. I just don;t get people sometimes. |

Marked them. Put restricted signs, and someone DID darwin themself. The family sued the town, and it got tossed out because the guy was clearly where he should not have been. There was no excuse for him being there. I kind of felt the same way about my corner lot in town. There was never any excuse for a snow mobiler to be there in the first place. |

People tend to have a survival response to feeling cold, even when they're at absolutely no risk, and they/we eventually figure it out with experience. It's okay if you don't like cold weather, at any rate. I figure if Janet had moved someplace cold 10 years ago she'd have a different relationship with cold weather than she does now. Well, the rule of thumb about that kind of thing is that if you care what you look like it's not that cold. There was a long cold snap (like, -50F for a week, and -40F for longer than that) in the Fairbanks area earlier this winter and my favorite comment about that was from a guy who said that when he left the house he had to look down to make sure that he'd remembered to put on pants. -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - Prouder than ever to be a member of the reality-based community |
