I have not been on this news group for over ten years. I just got a
new 1.5 to 2 year old pub from a rescue on Friday. She is a great little girl, she ran off the first time I took her out of the car but she is fine now and settled in well, I can run her without leash ( I am using the old Wits end training manual I used with the first two dogs we got many many years ago and she seems to be a quick learner, still have one old hound left and an old cat and no problems there either) Anyhow, took her to the vet today ( something I do not like to do, sorry i just have a tough time trusting most of them and do not like the idea of putting all these drugs into her anymore than I like doctors and the pharmaceutical companies pumping all this stuff into humans) and wanted to see if we could get her fixed. Now to the vet's credit she told me to wait and see if she goes into heat because the only way they could tell if she is spayed was to do an ultra sound. We assumed she may of already had a litter? I did get the rabies and parvo vaccines and worm pills as it is so hard to go into an animal hospital without them getting you to put some vaccines and stuff into your pet especially since she does run at a place where other dogs run free and yes there is dog poo on the ground. Anyhow are there any ways for me to tell if she is fixed that the vet may not know about? Having had male dogs I am not sure where the incision would be or even if there is one from the surgery? I assumed her running off initially was maybe due to her being in heat but she is not, maybe she was just at the end of her cycle? Or maybe it is just the new surroundings and stress related with that as i have no idea as what her past history was and the rescue shelter guy only had her for a couple of nights so knew nothing about her either. |

I was reading your webpage and this one as well http://saveourdogs.net/health.html http://www.naiaonline.org/pdfs/LongT...uterInDogs.pdf Interesting Article on Spaying and Neutering, Food for thought. My sweet gentle giant Rotti Husky mix died of cancer, he was neutered at an early age, he was only 11 years old. According to the "save our dogs" web page spaying may provide more health benefits then problems if done after maturity? ( the new "pup" is already 1.5 years old) . Going to have to think about this. |

In this year's Yukon Quest, which still has several teams on the trail, Lance Mackey's younger brother had to scratch because a female in heat basically shut the team down, and William Kleedehn, who was the early leader and was expected to win, stalled out because of a female in heat and ended up finishing sixth. When I've had intact females in heat the blood hasn't bothered me nearly as much as the squirrely, obnoxious behavior. Yeah - you probably don't want to rely on someone else keeping your recently surgerized dog quiet. And I'd like a couple of weeks for her to heal before I kennel her while I'm out of town judging the Ontario agility regionals and later (hopefully) attending the Canadian Nationals. And, it's got to be a Friday so she can have a restful weekend before she's back at work at the daycare. I planned Marcie's for a Monday, after her last fall flyball class, but enough time to heal for off leash play during my holiday party, with several weeks to heal before next semester of flyball started. Careful calculations! Plus, I'm interviewing vets as to their XRay-for-OFA experience (Maybe's vet freely admits his lack of experience in this). This is more planning than I'd counted on. I sometimes think I should have waited until 2 so I could get her x-rays out of the way at the same time, but made my 1 heat only decision and stuck to it. The vet that did Franklin's x-rays did a great job, but I don't use her anymore (she's an hour away). I need to talk to my current vet about the hospitals experience, but I have until October to decide at least. When is Maybe due in season again? -- Janet Boss www.bestfriendsdogobedience.com |

Janet Boss said in
rec.pets.dogs.behavior: When is Maybe due in season again? I have no idea. Her first heat was 14 months and she was 21 months on February 20. So, any time now. She'll be two on May 20, but I'm judging the Ontario Regionals in late May, my Regionals are 2 weeks later in mid-June, and the following weekend I'm judging out of province - but then I've got a 3 week break before my next out of town commitment. So my calendar tells me that the best Friday for surgery won't be until June 26, so I can count on another heat. -- --Matt. Rocky's a Dog. |
