Scully's relationship with Evil Betty has become interesting. Betty
appears to recognize her, even from several feet away, and will approach the tank wall and flare his fins in full battle display. Scully then puts her feet on the table that holds the tank and brings her nose to within an inch of the glass, exercising the border collie stare of doom, each breath fogging the glass. The standoff persists until one of them breaks. Sometimes it's Betty, who darts off because Moe, the ghost shrimp, comes over and starts pestering him. Usually it's Scully, because she can't resist making Betty flash around the tank by bumping it with her nose. How much do they understand? I suspect Scully knows Betty is a living thing and knows that's she's teasing him. And enjoys it. But what does that fish know? I find it amazing that he can evidently differentiate between Scully and Zane - both border collies, both being viewed through water, glass and air. Hell, my next door neighbors still can't tell the difference between the two of them, in spite of difference in size, build and markings that are plenty obvious to me. Is he playing or just reacting??? I mean, he's got a brain the size of half a lentil... |

He also knows that if he does a little dance in front of the glass for my wife she will feed him. My Betta will recognize me and when I am rooting around replanting plants that came up after a water change he will swim around my arm. Nick |

Nick Is it you, or does he get happy for just any old arm in his tank? Betty will follow any finger dragged across the glass of his tank, but of the dogs he only notices and challenges Scully. Zane, another similar, orca-colored dog, merits a brief examination and is then ignored, regardless of proximity; Cooper is entirely irrelevant. |

I don't know if it is just my arm but he only comes to the front of the glass for me, so I would assume he probably would only swim around my arm. Nick |
