I did. *I hate it that our dogs get older so quickly but I

and you are right.
the truth is I did NOT think of Hannah as a big dog. I still don't. I
guess the nearly 100 pound Newf Puppy deludes me.
I keep thinking she's middle aged. but at over 60 pounds she's a bit
more....
and thinking about it makes me sad.
but you are right... I need to be honest with myself. she's not some
toy breed that will live till 14....

You never know - seriously. The numbers give us averages
but there's some obviously some variability in there, and I
tend to think that the numbers include dogs that weren't
well cared-for, or who were euthanized because the owner
couldn't/wouldn't pay vet bills, etc. Hope for the best.

I guess it depends on a lot of things, including breed and mix
and genes, but I didn't think 7 was past middle age for a 60-lb
dog. Oppie was 13 when he died, and he weighed a muscular 90 in
his prime (he was on the large side for a Lab). I hear more and
more of dogs like Labs and GSDs and Goldens living to 15.

Oh I dunno. Depends on her breed mix, and if
you keep her slim.

To me, 60 pounds isn't that huge. Most of the
dogs I know in that age have lasted until
their early teens.

You've got a shot :-)

I hope so. I really DO call her my 'little dog' and I sit on the
couch with her in my lap most nights... and I really think she's still
a puppy.

this reality based living is killing me....

oh for what it's worth she seems to be feeling fine right now...

Indeed. My first lab mix lived to 15.5. I'm hoping at least the same
for Lucy.

7 is the age where vets like to do a baseline bloodwork. The BEGINNING
of becoming a senior. That said, I know some very OLD 7 year olds and
some extremely young 7 year olds. Kind of like people, there are a lot
of factors that determine "true age".

Yup. Don't forget that Brenin - who's taller than Hannah, and weighs only a
bit less - is not only still around at 14 but still going on long walks and
doing a bit of agility. (Mind you, I don't really think he's got more than
another year or so left, but still...)
