He thought their remarkable diversity must reflect interbreeding with several types of wild dogs. But the DNA findings say differently. All modern dogs are descendants of wolves, though this domestication may have happened twice, producing groups of dogs descended from two unique common ancestors. How and when this domestication happened has been a matter of speculation. It was thought until very recently that dogs were wild until about 12,000 years ago. But DNA analysis published in 1997 suggests a date of about 130,000 years ago for the transformation of wolves to dogs. This means that wolves began to adapt to human society long before humans settled down and began practicing agriculture. This earlier timing casts doubt on the long-held myth that humans domesticated dogs to serve as guards or companions to assist them. Rather, say some experts, dogs may have exploited a niche they discovered in early human society and got humans to take them in out of the cold." http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/evolution/li.../l_015_02.html Facts??? Hey! This means they haven't eaten a pure Wolf Diet in a LOT loner than many people think! (Good lord, was this supposed to be new info?) Apparently it is to Melinda! |

You're a nitpicker! They're from a *scientist*, and scientists are really smart so you should just take Catherine's word for it. Who's Catherine, BTW? http://www.puppyworks.com/speaker/odriscoll.html Catherine O'Driscoll is a founder of Canine Health Concern, and the author of 'What Vets Don't Tell You About Vaccines'. In their quest for answers, John and Catherine formed Canine Health Concern (CHC), an international group of veterinarians and animal guardians who research the causes of good and bad health in today's dogs. From this came the first (and only) definitive piece of research into the adverse effects of vaccines in dogs. CHC also began to promote natural feeding during the early '90s, and campaigned to make animal guardians aware of natural healthcare alternatives. 'What Vets Don't Tell You About Vaccines' became a word-of-mouth bestseller and was the subject of a network TV documentary which screened in the UK and around the world. http://www.vaccinationnews.org/Cathe...oll_letter.htm http://celticlion.wordpress.com/tag/...ine-odriscoll/ |

No, the "who's Catherine" question was a "why should I give a **** about what she says?" question, which remains unanswered. You only cite cranks, you don't cite researchers. Catherine is a crank, not a researcher, which brings us back around to the question of why I should pay attention to what she says. -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - Prouder than ever to be a member of the reality-based community |

Like the official NYT bestseller, or some made up bestseller list?) and therefore should be revered. Pandering to paranoia is another qualification. |

I just don't know why you think she and I would care if you personally pay attention to her. |

I'm struck by the similarity in name of this Catherine whoever's
organization (CHC) and the Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) which is, indeed, a legitimate organization affiliated with the OFA and the AKC CHF which helps breed clubs identify genetic disease issues and register dogs which meet a breed club's criteria for genetic health. (http://www.caninehealthinfo.org) The play of CHC and CHIC reminds me of other acronyms like ACK and CKC as bogus breed registries, playing on the initials used by real registries (AKC and CKC). Gives me a bit of a sour taste in my mouth. |
