Hi,
It's been a while since Bear left. I have kept in touch with the rescue group he was adopted from and he is still doing well in his new adoptive home. Since they are retired their lifestyle works quite well for him and they're all happy with each other. We were thinking of getting another dog and I had contacted an American Eskimo rescue group. Quite the application process. An 7 or 8 page application along with two personal reference checks ( which they actually contacted) and a chat with my vet clinic. Then they made a home visit. I appreciate the thoroughness. While the person was here on the home visit she mentioned that they had received an email from Animal Control in Bloomington Indiana about a senior eskie that was picked up as a stray and was going to be euthanized due to crowding. I asked her a little more about it and she emailed me a copy of the messages that they had received about him. They said that he was about 10+ years old and his sight is starting to go from cataracts but his temperament is fine. They also sent a couple of photos. The photos showed what appeared to be a calm dog, and very cute and fluffy. We talked about it and decided to adopt him. Luckily they got a hold of the animal control people before he was put down and worked out transportation. That was an amazing process. I never realized that they had this doggie railroad going all over the country in legs of 50-70 miles or so handing them off like little hitchhikers. I'm very impressed by all the people that do that. Emily and I decided to start volunteering for transport legs when we have weekends without my stepson at home. Anyway, back to the dog, we are meeting a volunteer tomorrow in Black River Falls Wisconsin to finish the last couple of legs of the transport and bring him home. I talked to the coordinator and she said she talked to the volunteer that had him the last day or two and the volunteer said he's an absolute sweetheart and was really glad they got him pulled. The volunteer also said that they don't think his vision is impaired more than slightly and he might be somewhat younger than 10. He sounds really laid back and calm which is a good fit for here. I have an appointment with my vet on Monday afternoon for all the tests, vaccinations, blood profiles, oil, lube, filters etc. and I'll see what they think about age. At this point animal control called him Klondike but that might not be his name. We will see how he responds and maybe pick a new one. So that's it for now. I'll post more once we get him and have him here at home. -Jim & ? |

I am familiar with the transportation efforts of another rescue group for Anatolians, and it seems to be very effective. My rescue dog Muttley is doing well and he managed not to bite any of the FIOS guys when they installed my high speed service. Now my email and website access zips along and I also finally have more than two grainy TV channels. This is my first post with the Verizon news server. Please post some pictures! Paul and Muttley |

Hi Jerry,
I see you're still around. Hate to think you'd be gone leaving all that bandwidth to waste.... ;-) Yep, they know all about Bear. They also know about the stepson which is why they brought another dog with on the home visit. Corey, my stepson, did fine. As you may not have recalled the main problem wasn't that he did anything inappropriate to Bear, it was the constant attention and people coming and going frequently for things like flute lessons, Cub Scouts, school, being picked up and dropped off by his Dad. Fairly normal activities but not conducive to Bear's problems. There were times when he tried to get Bear to interact and wanted to pet him, got in his face some etc. and ran up to him but that's pretty normal for an 11 year old. I don't regret the final decision, though I still miss Bear. I also discussed the other rescues I've had and, as I mentioned, filled out a pretty thorough application including a list of all pets I've ever owned and what happened to them. That took me back.. :-) AnyHOWE, feel free to repost anything I've put up on here. I'm completely comfortable with the past and prefer to learn from it and look to the future. Take care, -Jim |

I have a name suggestion that I think is fitting, Traveller. I don't know that it particularly fits an Eskie, but it sure fits his circumstances and it's a fine name with a rich history, General Robert E. Lee's famous mount. Karla |

MENTAL ILLNESS IN RPD* Mental illness is a public issue in these newsgroups. People are always running around calling other people mentally ill and diagnosing their illnesses. I think it's only fair that we have an accurate list of who is and who isn't mentally ill, so that we can avoid any misunderstandings and promote group harmony. Folks suffering psychotic breaks from reality oftenwonder: "HOWE does WON KNOW if I REALLY was (or STILL) ARE PSYCHO, NUTS-O, or just plain old MENTALLY ILL?" But it turned out most of the people doing the accusing and finger pointing and "you better take your meds" etc... were mentally ill themselves. That's a huge story, and I SCOOPED IT. MaryBeth for instance, was constantly telling people to take their meds. Once I started to do a little research, the floodgates opened and an amazing story unfolded. ------------------- HOWEDY Soup, Thanks Soup. You'd think your list got 'm covered, Soup to NUTS, eh??? wclodius @los-alamos.net:
"FWIW I think of Asperger's as a form of autism, one of two or three forms of high functioning autism. I would not say that the only commonality is the diagnosis. The commonality is the set of symptoms that should lead to a diagnosis. The diagnosis implies problems in communication, particularly problems in communicating emotion, which can be addressed by a variety of (often related) techniques. However the dividing line between autism, other forms of pervasive developmental disorder, and schizophrenia is arbitrary and beyond that a child can not be summarizeed by a single diagnosis, or set of symptoms. FWIW I believe I have Asperger's, but that diagnosis only became common in the 90s, several decades after the time in life when that diagnosis might have been very useful to me." |
