There is an animal shelter in Tool, TX that is running out of money and food. wfaa ch. 8 in Dallas has done a story about the shelter. The story should still be on the web site and there is contact info. for the shelter. In case you miss it, here it is. Phone no. 903-432-3422. Address is 10200 County Road, Tool, TX 75143. There is a web site: The Humane Society of Cedar Creek Lake that can take donations http://www.hscd.org. Tool is a tiny town SE from Dallas. It seems to be a very rural area and the shelter serves several small towns. I wish I could do more, but I am sending out this story to as many people as I can. I know we all have to cut back now and I am included in that. I will send them what I can. I am sure no matter how small the donation, it will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. I think it's important to support your own local shelters/charities. It's all well and good when one can get national coverage and the money pours in, but our local SPCA doesn't have an office, a facility, or any building at all. They rely totally on fosters and donations to keep rescued animals safe and cared for. A huge job for just a few folks. -- Phyrie Kiba the Cav's Pics: http://www.flickr.com/photos/phyrie/...758930/detail/ |

There are hundreds, maybe thousands, of shelters in the same boat as this one, but for whatever reason they don't get/seek the publicity online or through other media. |

I do understand the wide spread needs. The area is very rural (like many others) and I was hoping that readers in TX would respond. The news last night (Mon) did show that many have delivered bags of pet food to the shelter. These ng's are read all over the world and I would hope that if one cannot help out with this request, that they would look to their local shelters to give some help. Petey and Paloma's Mom |

There are ongoing problems and then there are occasional catastrophes (Katrina, for example, or the recent destruction of Eagle, AK), and I think for ongoing problems is't probably best to keep it local. I think shelters everywhere are struggling right now and if everybody did international solicitations, well, I don't know. -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - Prouder than ever to be a member of the reality-based community |

I have no objections to soliciting for genuine need in any(legitimate) fashion. The individual is quite capable of toggling past anything that they don't want to become involved with. |

The individual is quite capable of toggling past anything that they don't want to become involved with. Right. Let's see: 6000 animal shelters in the US, virtually all of which are in need, ~900 in Canada, not sure how many in Central America, South America, Europe, Asia, Australia, or Africa - sure, it would be *so* useful for them all to post requests for help to a *health* newsgroup. After all, topicality is so 20th century. And certainly, I intend to donate to each and every one of them. I expect that those of you who can't afford that but who'd like to support local shelters in need have no idea how to track them down and so would appreciate sorting through thousands of requests for donations to find the one you'd like to support. What a fantastic use of resources. And it's not like anybody uses the group for any other reason, right? Great thinking there, tiger. -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - Prouder than ever to be a member of the reality-based community |

So it's inconvenient and logistically implausible to donate to all of them so they shouldn't try all options? I still stand by the option that one can pass over anything that doesn't suit you.....as I should have done with this thread. |

Out of curiosity, and given your apparently poor impulse control, would *you* skip over thousands of requests for donations? Or would you think "This newsgroup doesn't have anything but people begging for money - I'll unsubscribe?" Hey! Why don't you post requests for donations to your local animal shelter to comp.unix.wizards? Newsgroup topics are just a *suggestion*.
