We had an amazing number of survey submissions for the first raw feeding
survey conducted by Raw Fit Pet! Raw feeders with a wide range in
experience participated, totaling 1870 submissions! Of these 1870
submissions, 1735 raw feeders are feeding raw to dogs, 423 are feeding
raw to cats, and 32 are feeding raw to ferrets.

The results are as follows:



Question:

Did you start feeding a raw diet because of a pet with an
existing health condition?

If yes, has a raw diet helped with this
condition or disease?



Result:

Of the 1870 owners surveyed, 1004 owners answered “yes”

497 or 49 % - Completely healed

428 or 43 % - Improvements noticed

20 or 2 % - Too soon to tell

30 or 3 % - Unsure

29 or 3% - No improvements noticed





Question:

Do you ever feed a conventional kibble/canned diet to your pets? (click
all that apply )



Result:

Of the 1870 owners surveyed, 1850 owners answered the question

1181 or 64% - NO

290 or 16% - Yes, occasionally at home

234 or 12% - Yes, as part of a regular diet

96 or 5% - Yes, while on vacation

49 or 3% - Yes, while on vacation and
occasionally at home



Question:

Have any of your raw fed pets been diagnosed with any of the following
conditions that were attributed to raw feeding? (click all that apply)

Broken teeth (fracture)

Salmonella

Other bacterial infection

Foreign body requiring surgery

Other

None



Result:

Of the 1870 owners surveyed, 1813 owners answered the question

1613 or 89% - have experienced NONE of these
conditions

200 or 11% - have experienced one or more of
the above conditions

Of these 200 owners

64.9% - Broken/fracture teeth (recreational bones commonly noted)

0.5% - Salmonella (deer
meat)

7.5% - Other bacterial
infection

4.7% - Foreign body
requiring surgery

22.4% - Other



Question:

What do you do to maintain your pet’s dental health? (click
all that apply)

Dental care by vet

Home dental care other than raw meaty bones

Raw meaty bones

Nothing



Result:

Of the 1870 owners surveyed, 1862 owners answered the question

1632 or 88% - reported NO vet dental care
required when on a raw diet

230 or 12% - reported vet dental care required at some point in animal’s
life, however most indicated that the frequency greatly decreased after
switching to a raw diet



Of the 1632 owners stating no vet dental care is needed

1152 – Use raw meaty bones only

115 – Use home dental care only

188 – Do nothing for dental care

177 – Use both raw meaty bones and home dental care



Question:

Since feeding raw, have any of your pets had any parasites
(internal or external)?



Result:

Of the 1870 owners surveyed, 1753 owners answered the question

1396 or 80% - NONE

228 or 13% - Home diagnosed

129 or 7% - Vet diagnosed



Of the 357 owners stating presence of parasites

52% - Internal (40% tapeworms (most commonly from wild caught animals
and fleas), 18% roundworms, 14% giardia)

48% - External (60% fleas, 33% ticks (fewer than when on kibble commonly
noted))





Question:

If you have dogs, have they ever had to have their anal
glands expressed since being on a raw diet?



Result:

Of the 1870 owners surveyed, 1720 owners answered the question

1390 or 81% - NO

216 or 12% - Occasionally

85 or 5% - Regularly

29 or 2% - Unsure
