Did he just start chewing his paws recently? If so, what else did you
do just recently that might be contributing to this? Did you move?
Install new carpet? Did you change his food? Have you ever had a vet
check his paws? Could anything be causing him stress? New addition to
the family? When does he chew his paws? During the day? After eating?
Do his ears bother him, too? Has it been particularly wet in your
area? Does this jive with when the chewing started? It could be yeast,
etc. Do you do anything to interrupt the behavior? Does he have enough
toys? Is he bored? I know, lots of questions, and no real answers, but
maybe they'll help you zero in on a possible cause. Your best bet, of
course, is to see your vet. He can at least give you something to
treat the pads with, etc. But it would be even more beneficial,
long-term, to identify the cause.

Did he just start chewing his paws recently?

not really

If so, what else did you
do just recently that might be contributing to this? Did you move?

no

Install new carpet?

no

Did you change his food?

no he gets sweet potato and salmon and has for months since we figured
out that chicken beef and grains make him have bowel problems.

Have you ever had a vet check his paws?

yep, they are dry. he gets cracks and cuts on them.

Could anything be causing him stress?

everything stresses this boy. he is a rescue we';ve had about 8
months.

New addition to the family?

nope

When does he chew his paws? During the day? After eating?

not after eating. it seems to be when they bother him. he just licks
on the one pad that I think has a crack from being dry.

Do his ears bother him, too?

nope.
no rubbing his face or ears or shaking of the head

Has it been particularly wet in your area?

nope except when he goes to the dog beach.

Does this jive with when the chewing started? It could be yeast,
etc. Do you do anything to interrupt the behavior? Does he have enough
toys? Is he bored? I know, lots of questions, and no real answers, but

nope don't think it's yeast.
he has more toys than most dogs (and another dog with even more toys)
he's not bored. he's rarely home alone (hubby and teen are off for the
summer with him)

He's chewed them for the entire 8 months you've had him?

Have you ever had a vet check his paws?

yep, they are dry. he gets cracks and cuts on them.

Do you use any balm, etc? Do they smell?

Could anything be causing him stress?

everything stresses this boy. he is a rescue we';ve had about 8

Then I'd start there. Stress can cause a dog to chew on his paws.
Stress can weaken the immune system, leading to all kinds of
possibilities. In your opinion, what do you think it is that stresses
him most? Are there times when he doesn't appear to be stressed? What
does he do that makes you think he's stressed?

When does he chew his paws? During the day? After eating?

not after eating. it seems to be when they bother him. he just licks

Always the one pad? Didn't the vet give you anything for it? Balms,
ointments, sprays, etc? Does he chew more at one time of day than any
other?

Has it been particularly wet in your area?

nope except when he goes to the dog beach.

How often? Did he chew his pads during the winter, too? More often,
less often?

Does this jive with when the chewing started? It could be yeast,
etc. Do you do anything to interrupt the behavior? Does he have enough
toys? Is he bored? I know, lots of questions, and no real answers, but

I've got a great treatment for yeast if you do figure that out...if
he's ever been on antibiotics in his life, he's definitiely got it.
Could also be parasites on his paws...did the vet scrape his paws?

Oh, for G-d's sake. NO, HE DOESN'T _DEFINITELY_ HAVE IT.
He might, he might not. Geeze.

on and off
like he's not chewing them now. it's not a constant thing.

Have you ever had a vet check his paws?

yep, they are dry. he gets cracks and cuts on them.

Do you use any balm, etc? Do they smell?

no that's why I asked what I can use on them
they do not smell
not like corn
not like yeast
not like beer
not like bread
not like anything.

Could anything be causing him stress?

everything stresses this boy. he is a rescue we';ve had about 8

LOL you really are kidding right?
Harley is stressed by life. He's a rescue. He came stressed.
strangers stress him
the car stresses him
noise stresses him
going out for a walk seeing strangers stresses him.

When does he chew his paws? During the day? After eating?

not after eating. it seems to be when they bother him. he just licks

he really doesn't chew on it all that often... I'm more concerned that
they are dry and need lotion or cream.

Has it been particularly wet in your area?

nope except when he goes to the dog beach.

How often? Did he chew his pads during the winter, too? More often,
less often?

ya know I can't really say. since most of the day he's home without
humans.
