Default Buddy can't win for loosing

Buddy has his other leg repaired 2 months ago. He's been doing
wonderfully and the vet was very happy at his last visit that his muscle
tone is so good and the leg is healing nicely. For the first time since
I got him 4 years ago he actually has walked normally and was for the
first time ever pulling me along. He's been a very happy puppy.

We no sooner get over this and Gabby wakes me at 4 am on Tuesday to find
him panting like he can't breath. I take his temperature it's normal
he's not hot and I have no idea what's going on. I called the emergency
vet and rushed him to them. It usually takes 45 minutes we made it in
30. By the time we get there he's still having some panting but it's
gotten a bit better and I had the AC on full the whole way and he sat
with his head right in front of it the whole way. They take his temp
see that he's wobbly some, get xrays, heart worm test and other blood
work. The xrays show that the heart is enlarged and his lungs don't
look right. The blood work comes back ok with just a slight rise in
white count. By 7:30 he's stabilized and he's transferred to the same
vet clinic that fixed his leg. They do a ultrasound of his heart and
chest. It turns out he has a blood clot in his heart and they feel the
panting was from one in his lungs that since then has broke up and passed.

He's home now on heart medication. The vet who treated him was supposed
to call me with a prescription for a blood thinner she was researching
which one would be best thinking at maybe one of the new ones would be a
better choice. I call on Thursday since I still haven't heard anything
and then I call again on Friday. Still no call back from her. So Monday
I'm taking him into my local vet and see what she feels we can do. Then
I'm writing a NASTY letter to the owner of the clinic letting him know
exactly what I think of the vet who treated him on Tuesday. I should
not have had to call twice for the blood thinner and she's never called
in the prescription. I've checked with the pharmacy twice and they
have nothing for him.

She basically told me that they rarely have a dog survive this and that
he could kill over at any time. That in 23 years she's only ever saw
two other dogs who had blood clots in the heart. So he's home now and
being spoiled rotten for what ever time he has left.

It's down to short walks around the block 3 times a day to get more
weight off him. No being outside when it's hot and air conditioning on
24/7 down stairs for him now until cold weather.

I have to go it's time for his evening walk now that it's cooled off to
77 out.

Celeste, what an awful thing for Buddy and you to have to go
through! I hope you can find a solution.

This is your regular vet, whom your trust? Sorry - just trying to keep
it straight. I hope that he has many good days left.

E-mail me please.
