Default Senior pooch falls down unexpectedly

12 1/2 year old Brittany gal, 28 lbs. Looking -very- healthy and active
in the last month or so.

2001:
She comes up lame. Have to carry her out to yard in porta-crate for
1 day. Dx'd hip dysplasia by (scary looking) X-ray. Mostly normal
3 days later. No CHD symptoms whatsoever since 2001.

2008:
Heart murmur Dx'd.

2008/9:
Has "Seizures" resembling little brain tremors of some kind.
"Seizure" defined:
1.) Brief and quiet little cry lasting 5 sec. or less, accompanied
by shivering.
2.) Disoriented but cognizant pooch. Walks around aimlessly
and agitated but obeys "Sit", etc.
No evidence of GI, muscle/joint or other pain.
Usually normal again after 12-36 hours.

Aside from skin allergies no other known health concerns. No recent
changes in diet, meds, etc. She was getting 10 mg prednisone/day
for allergies, but she's had a similar dose (in season) for years.

Two days ago around 1:00 I uncrated her, took her for a normal looking
walk, then fed and yarded her. Lying on the back yard walk, she
started craning her head back and forth. Then tried to walk and
fell down. I sat with her about 5 minutes, then she got up and
defalcated again, tried to walk (very wobbly), and laid down again.
After about 10 minutes, I got her to walk to the door and I carried
her down the steps to her crate. Her gums were pale, nose a little
warm. She seemed coherent thru it all.

By around 3:00 she seemed to be normal again. Looks 100% normal
in the following 2 days.

Something took her right off her feet. Very wobbly, like she was
drunk. But only for a few minutes to a couple hours. This is a
-very- active/strong pooch (think "Tireless, Tireless Hunter!"):
nothing of a non-serious nature takes her off her feet.

Vet examined, noted that murmur sounded worse. Tentative Dx is heart,
Enalapril prescribed but waiting for blood pressure reading (her
machine was broken) before administration.

I don't think it was seizures. Certainly not gran mal, which I'd
recognize.

She looks fine physically. No signs of congestive heart save pale
gums 2 days ago.

I occurs to me it could have been poor blood flow (heart) or,
conceivably, pain from a dysplasia recurrence. But I'm just
fishing: the cause (given fast recuperation) is mysterious.

Opinions, info, things to try, etc?

Thx,
P

Did you know that prednisone shortens a dog's life? Stop giving it to
her please. All it does is hide symptoms that shouldn't be hidden.
Instead you need to find the source of the allergies and remove it
permanently. Prednisone is dangerous!

And it may be her problem right now....

To me prednisone is the lazy way out of an allergy problem and
unfortunately most vets fall into that category. What do they care? They
aren't the one living with the side effects.

1) Ask your general practicioner vet for a referral, and get a second
opinion - preferably from a vet who specializes in internal medicine and/or
cardiology.

2) Don't ask anonymous people on USENET (which this group is, regardless of
where you're accessing it from) or on the internet; you have no way of
knowing their actual level of expertise, and many (especially in these
remnants of USENET) are dangerous kooks and/or laypeople with serious biases
and/or agendas.

Neither the vet nor myself are 100% convinced that her heart caused the incident.
A cardiologist has been identified: she'll get a battery of tests if the
incident is replicated.

Then why are you here, and why should I listen to what you say? :-)

I've been on such forums since the days of Bitnet. There are some
knowledgable folks in addition to those you describe.
