Daniel, crate training is all the rage just now but was never intended as
far as I can tell for more thn pretty much overnight use.

I disagree. I see no reason to crate dogs overnight, but I would
certainly crate a puppy when I wasn't home to supervise it. Crating
also helps in the housebreaking process, since a crate mimics a den
and most dogs will avoid soiling their dens. Daniel apparently has
breaks in his workday, rather than working 8-10 continuously, so he
can let the pup out of the crate and take it outside, play with it,
etc. during that time.

That still puts the dog in a crate for at least 8 hours a day. That is
horrible! If you think that is ok you need to give your dogs up.
