Puppies need to chew to exercise their teeth, just like babies. Give her some toy for chewing, make sure you praise her when she uses it, and hope for the best. Someone around here bought a sofa at a garage sale for his German shepherd puppy. I am told that by the puppy was a year old, the sofa had completely disappeared. But it only cost five dollars or so. |

Can you confine her to a smaller area such as a kitchen? You can use baby gates. If not, you can use a crate to contain her. Alison |

I agree with Aliison. Confining the puppy to a small room such as a
bathroom or kitchen might be good. Better yet, a good crate. Crate training early in a dog's life can really be helpful on many levels, and the dog will come to view the crate as it's "home" and feel secure there. Also the chew toy thing is good. Another thing to keep her busy is to put some small treats such as dog biscuits in a plastic bottle (such as a plastic soda bottle or water bottle) leaving the cap off. The treats should be small enough to pop out of the bottle top with a bit of shaking, but it should still be a challenge for the dog to try to knock the bottle around in it's quest to get the treats out. Worth a try! Emma |

Thanks, i will look for a crate, i always think that use a crate for many hours will be bad for the dog but a lot of people told me that I must use a crate. Daniel, crate training is all the rage just now but was never intended as far as I can tell for more thn pretty much overnight use. Do not use this in replacement of training all day long. You cant for example crate the dog for 9-10 hours during daytime while at work. Definately not also for 8 hours or so at night. I have slowly learned that a crate isnt a horrible thing for a limited time or reason. Here's my though process. Apple-dog, new and soon to come home may be more comfortable at night for the first few days in her 'safe home crate' until she feels better. She has been trained that this is a safe stress free spot. After that, ther door will be open when Don says it feels right (Don knows dogs better than I do). Once she picks a spot, we add blankets to the floor there. No more crate. I understand that many use crates, but Don doesnt like them and I don't like the idea mostly because we have seen them overused. My Mother-in-law (May she rest in peace) made that mistake. She got a Rottweiler pup when she was 70 after her husband died then couldnt control it so it lived in a cage 20 hours a day for 7 years. Sadly, we were in Japan for most of that and heard later after the MIL died on what had been done. It was too late. I have and will ever have, an aversion to crate training after that even if I know there is a responsible use that is done right. 'Bear' (the MIL's rottie) sadly had to be put down. A sweet natured pup by personaility, too many years passed. He escsaped while they were clearing the house after she died and being totally unsocialized, attacked a 14 yo kid on his way home from the school bus. (kid BTW is ok thank you God!). If if hadnt been for the damn crate misuse, he was a fine dog. Ok, so I am opinionated. Please, use the crate *responsibly*. It's not a replacement for training. |

I see no reason to crate dogs overnight, but I would certainly crate a puppy when I wasn't home to supervise it. Crating also helps in the housebreaking process, since a crate mimics a den and most dogs will avoid soiling their dens. Daniel apparently has breaks in his workday, rather than working 8-10 continuously, so he can let the pup out of the crate and take it outside, play with it, etc. during that time. |

If you have a puppy, it needs to learn that the crate is not where it can relieve itself, but it needs to go every few hours, so you should not leave it alone in a crate all day. Someone will need to be able to let it out for at least fifteen minutes at least once every four hours. -- Bill Clodius los the lost and net the pet to email |
