Again - why? I do think it is a benefit for a dog to be comfortable in
a crate, travel in a crate in the car for safety and be able to use one
should you be staying with friends or relatives. If a dog can be left
when you leave the house without it being problematic, it is mostly a
matter of choice, but I am not a fan.

Will this be a problem to retrain him . also what size and type of
crate should we get . We are retired so during the day he will be with
us and be free around the house .

The largest crate you can fit in the area where you want it. Since this
isn't a baby puppy (who may sometimes eliminate in too large a crate),
why not offer as much comfort as possible? In the car, the largest
crate that can fit in the vehicle.
