Default Muttley on YouTube!

I just bought a Nikon CoolPix L22 camera ($99 at Walmart) and tried it out
on a walk with Muttley. Here is the main site; choose whatever video clips
you wish, but #1 and #3 are short.
http://www.youtube.com/user/PaulAndMuttley

It's a little tricky handling the leash and a little camera at the same
time. I'm going to try to use a headstrap or make a hatcam so I can do
hands-free video. And eventually I might try clipping it on him, and have a
true Muttley-Cam.

Look for more exciting (or not) episodes of the Muttley Show!

Oh, dear. I don't whether to cry or just weep uncontrollably. Paul, you
can't seriously expect us to view those videos and think well of you, can
you? I'm just flummoxed. I've never seen a more disconnected dog in my
life. It's just so sad. I always thought you were exaggerating for the
drama, but I see now that is not the case. I don't even know where to
begin.

Let's start with the easy stuff. Muttley is fat. Very fat. Dangerously
fat. He ROLLS when he walks. You knew this at least two years ago, and
claimed he was thinning down. Apparently that's not true. At one point in
the video, he lifts his head up, and the rolls of fat on his neck prevents
him from moving his head higher. What on earth are you thinking, keeping
him this heavy? You must know how bad this is for him. I know you do, I've
seen you discuss it here. What the hell happened?

OK, to not so easy stuff. Let me ask you this: is this how you talk to him
normally, or were you just nervous for the camera? Do you prattle on like
that all the time, or were you just adding "colour" to the video? I must
have heard you say "Muttley" two hundred times in those videos, and he
didn't pay attention once. Not one single time did your dog look back at
you when you talked to him. Not once.

The whole thing started out with his back to you. In the first thirty
seconds you beg him to look at you at least three times. He obliged once,
but it was sidelong, and dismissive. He only looks at you again once in the
whole time of filming, despite your calling him, saying his name, and
prattling on about "what's that smell" etc. This is a dog with no respect
for you at all, I'm sorry to say. I derive no pleasure from this, as I
really thought you were screwing with us about Muttley and how you treat
him. I'm horrified to find out it's all been true.

You have an odd expectation of what you want for a dog to do on a walk. You
have Muttley on a very long leash, with the very end in but two of your
fingers, from the one shot I got of your hand. You guys aren't going for a
walk together. Muttley is going for a walk, and you happen to be there. He
isn't pulling on the lead, as you so often complain about. He doesn't even
know you are there! He could care less that you are there. It's so
obvious. He never acknowledges you, doesn't look to you, doesn't obey you
(I'm thinking of when you tried to call him in the field). You say, "Come
Muttley, good boy!!" when he hasn't moved a muscle. What the hell was good
about it? He finally headed toward you, but it wasn't because you called
him. He just felt like moving in that direction. But you told him he was a
good boy, anyway. He never looks in your direction, never pays attention to
you at all.

I now thoroughly understand why Muttley leaves whenever he wants. Why
wouldn't he? You haven't asserted one tiny bit of discipline on him, and he
has not one iota of respect for you as a result. I'm sad, Paul. Muttley is
NOT a happy dog. He's a dog that is alive. And that's about it. I saw no
life, no joy, no happiness in any of his motions or expressions. Just
because you prattle away at him doesn't mean he's listening. Where was the
play? Where was the fun? Where was the joy? Locked up in a dog that has
shut down.

I won't even get into the bad handling of the leash, with your "heel" with
the leash wrapped around and under him.

I just don't know what else to say. I'm sad, though. I really did think,
in the back of my mind, that you were all just trolling for your own
amusement with your descriptions of poor Muttley. I wish I hadn't seen how
really sad, fat and pathetic he is. And if this much is true, and you hold
true to form, you will now jump on me and trash my opinion. So be it. But
I still feel sad, for Muttley.

What sort of discipline should Paul have given? If you think Muttly has
shut down then perhaps he is confused and uncertain by Paul's lack of
clarity. He needs clear direction more than discipline
I don't think Paul is trolling. He is making mistakes that many dog
owners make and he doesn't realise.

Loverly scenery!
I wouldn't be able to walk there , the terrain is too dangerous for me.
It's nice to talk to our dogs , we all do this but you know to them its all
yadder yadder and they blank it out.
When you want Muttly to do something , make it concise Sit , Come ,
This way. Don't stick the instruction in a long sentence . Don't constantly
say his name.
When he does what you ask say Good.

snipped lots of pure crap

This kind of reaction from you was expected. It's a shame you can't be
truly objective.

All I saw was a slow walk through some nice woods.

But he's had so many opportunities to correct those mistakes - and he
refuses. He's going to come back here and post 2000 reasons why it's
OK that Muttley is obese, and why Muttley actually likes to hear Paul
constantly babbling at him, and why although most dogs need more
leadership Muttley doesn't because he was on the streets....ad
nauseum. We've been here before.

Fair enough but in this thread Paul was simple showing us some video of
Muttley on a walk. We've all done that. He wasn't asking for any advice on
training but Phyrie really got stuck in there!

Yeah, but Paul is *always* simply showing, or simply telling, and it's
pictures of how fat Muttley is, or a story about all the unhealthy
crap he fed him during a trip, or a story about him getting loose, or
bragging about how amazing Muttley is that he can be left alone for 12
hours...and he knows the reactions he's going to get. Some think he
tells the stories and shows the pictures in order to get those
reactions. Quite recently he was blathering about the strong bond he
and Muttley have and that Muttley's life is better than that of the
average dog. Saying that, and then posting video like this - do you
really think he wasn't expecting comments like Phyrie's? There's a
long history here and it's not possible to erase it and 'start over',
particularly when it's so clear that nothing has changed. Sorry, but
IMO Paul deserves everything he gets on rpdb, and always has.

I didn't respond to him; you did. I have the feeling you just want to
argue. I responded to your post yesterday about rpdb regulars saying
it's OK to leave dogs alone 9 or 10 hours, and stating that I don't
think that's OK, because I thought you were interested in discussing
that. Maybe you just want to keep talking about the cabal and
groupspeak and all that.
