I hesitate to recommend a specific brand because I don't know what's available in your area or how much you're able to spend on a dog food. Also, one of the brands I used to recommend, Innova, was just bought by Proctor & Gamble, which is the company that bought Iams. It is not unreasonable to think there might be the same sort of changes coming in Wellness that occurred in Iams. I think it's important to get some basic information about dog foods before making a decision. This site is an independent review of dog foods, and contains a lot of information on what to look for in a dog food: http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/ Here's another site that has dog food reviews, tips on choosing a food, what to avoid, etc. It also has information on how to read a dog food label and the AAFCO definitions of dog food ingredients. I'm sure Orijen is on both of those sites. I'm not familiar with it and don't think it's sold in my areas. You really ought to do your own homework on food choices for your own dog. If you are just waiting for someone to tell you what to do, I can't help you. I agree with sighthounds & siberians that doing your own research is best. That dogfoodanalysis site is great - I have used it myself, and it has a wealth of information. One thing I've found interesting is how a particular brand can have a type in the 6 star category and another in a 5 or 4 star category. Anyway, do your own research and choose one of the better quality brands that works for you and your dog. I feed Blue Buffalo Wilderness, which is grain free and works for our dog. It's not cheap, though, but it is the best brand we've fed this dog, so it's worth the cost to me. Wellness is another good brand, but if it becomes another IAMS, I wouldn't get too attached to it. (And what a shame if it does become another IAMS.) My Cavalier was on Orijen since he came home three years ago, but I've been raw feeding him for the last three months. I did a great deal of research and decided Orijen was the best food I could find in my area. It's Canadian, no grain, and rates as high as you can get at the dogfoodanalysis.com site. It's pricey, though, so keep that in mind. For me, I am lucky enough that the price was not a big concern, but I know it is for some folks, especially those with larger, or multiple, dogs. But nothing will substitute for your own research, as said by others. |
