Default Humping - update

The squirtgun tip worked GREAT! I have been very consistent about not
allowing any humping at all, which has slowly but surely had an effect, but
there have been a couple of times he hasn't gotten the message, and the mere
sight of "Mr. Squirty" was enough to make him sit his butt right down. Of
course, he gets lots of praise and "good doggie" pats when he does good
(he's not motivated much by food, oddly enough), which I'm hoping will
reinforce that "humping = no fun and possible face shower" whereas "no
humping = more time to play with dog friends and no face shower."

I still get people tell me not to worry - the dogs will work it out - but I
no longer listen and stop him every time. I wish I'd done that in the
beginning, but better late than never. In the meantime, I'll keep carrying
the squirtgun with me until he's completely broken the humpy habit. I'm
very encouraged, since more often than not he now listens to me and doesn't
try it, whereas before I had to take him by the collar and pull him down
every time to stop. I guess since I was inconsistent, he figured he had
nothing to lose if he went ahead and did it.

He's such an awesome dog in every way - except for the humping thing. And
letting him get away with it only made it worse. But he's a smart dog, and
now that I'm consistent with not allowing it ever, I feel certain one day it
won't be an issue at all.
