Default Maybe Flying

Once again, I took Maybe on the plane with me this weekend -
smooth getting to my judging assignment, rough flight coming
home, but she handled it well - as all of my dogs have. They've
all been comfortable in their crates, though only Rocky ever had
his door closed at home.

I've acclimated Maybe to a whole bunch of different situations,
but she didn't like the hotel we stayed at this weekend (and
this is the 3rd weekend in a row we've stayed in hotels and
she's been fine. It was strange - I think she saw ghosts, or
heard hallway echoes I couldn't (it was an odd hotel), but she
settled down fine at the trial site.

That's it for traveling for a month, thankfully.

Hey Matt, other than an approved airport carrier, what all is involved in
flying with a dog?

Other once long ago flying 2 cats from San Diego to Norfolk (SIL picked up
while we drove to Norfolk) I've not done this.

I vaguely recall I needed shot records but that may have been for the
hospice the SIL used after picking them up for us.

Kiba has flown twice, but not with me, with the dogsitter! He's flying
again this weekend, so the sitter can visit her family down in the city. He
rides in a carrier in the cabin, and she says he does just fine. No
problems at all. I think riding in a crate in the car must have helped
acclimate him to confinement during travel. He's ALWAYS in a crate in the
car.

We're leaving for Calgary on Thursday, in case anyone is wondering why my
dog is flying with the sitter. :-D

Cavaliers as with many small dogs, are easier to transport by plane than
larger breeds, such as Matt's border collie, which cannot go in the
cabin.

Say hello to Matt.

It really depends upon the airline and their rules. I mostly
fly within Canada because Canada is where I judge and trial in
agility (though Bermuda has applied to join the AAC and I'd
love to judge there!).

Air Canada is bad bad bad when it comes to dogs - they've
tried to ban dogs from flights but the consumer protection
agency won't let them.

I fly with my dogs on WestJet - friendly, helpful, and I've
never had a problem in what has to be two dozen dog flights.
FWIW, WestJet, many years ago, based its business model on the
US carrier, JetBlue. I have no idea whether JetBlue is as
good with pets.

I've flown my dogs often, though I don't know cats very well.

I've never needed to provide vaccination records because I
stay within the country, but the airlines' definition of
required crate size is wrong-headed. They require that the
dog be able to stand fully erect with 2" head clearance. To
me, that's too large a crate in case of turbulance. So, with
Maybe, I bring in a 350 size crate, but have a 450 ready in my
vehicle in case the 350 is rejected.

I also wait until I see my dog loaded on to the plane before I
board. Westjet puts them in the forward cargo hold which is
in front of their 737 engines. If I'm connecting, I book seat
7F (or nearby) which is right above the luggage ramp. I don't
leave until I see the dog unload.

If, from this, you get the idea that I'm anal - yes, I am.

FWIW, I don't think that's anal at all. I'm sure there are many, many
dogs that complete safe and uneventful flights, and we only hear the
few horror stories of animals getting loose inside or outside the
plane, etc.; but if it's your dog, it wouldn't matter if that were the
only time it ever happened. I've never flown with a dog or shipped a
dog, but I'm sure I'd be just as vigilant as you if I did.

Pretty much same rules (at least when I did it).

Well, ours is problematic because of Cash's 'shape'. Probably a full foot
clearance above his head or near it (hasn't been in it much). Had to get
one long enough for a short legged long bodied dog. It's just big enough to
be able to turn around in if he works at it. We got the airport one
thinking it would match his earlier 'den' with his rescue folks but found it
too small for use so got a simple cage until he no longer needed that for
comfort. He's never used the airport crate.

I hadn't thought about too much space until you mentioned it. I can
probably mail order something shaped better for him. No turning around
space I gather? If that's best, then there no point in us keeping this one.
We can give it to our local rescue society that we got Cash from and they
can use it for a dog more sized to it as a 'den' and gift it to the next
owner.

Grin, thats ok! I'm quite anal about my pet's health too!

Oh, if any ever fly a cat, here's a tip I wish I had had then. Use velcro to
the bottom and sewn to a comfy cloth or rug bit for the bottom. There's no
room for cat litter in the fly crates for cats (in fact, wasn't allowed at
least with my 2 many years ago). An imperfect solution granted but better
than letting it just roll around on the bottom when they mess up the towel
or whatever.

Nice! I seem to recall there is a size limit to allowed in cabin? Kiba
from the pics would fit it.

Oh, there may be allowance for larger if a seeing eye type dog.
