Default Making Booties

Grin, not that all of you need this but I thought I'd tell you about how to
make dog booties. We actually bought this first set at a local dog friendly
craft fair but the construction is easy. Lady was making them on the spot
so I had her make a set fitted to Cash.

A circle of fairly heavy cowhide was cut from a larger piece that was
soaking in water. Basically Cash stood on the leather and she marked an
oval around his feet then a larger one outwards about 3 inches of that. She
noted something I'd not, which is that Cash is long-toed in comparison to
most dogs. She said pre-made booties may not fit him very well and
described what to look for and how to get a bigger pair then filler them so
they don't blister or rub.

Ok, so Cash is standing to the side now and she cuts a bit of rabbit fur and
puts this fur up then sews it down leaving extra material in the center as
she explains when the leather dries it will even out. Next, she makes the
top circle into a little roll and sews that then she put in pop rivets
below. The roll is so the leather doesn't tear and the pop rivets help as
well.

Next, she gets Cash to stand on the booties. I get to pick out a cute 4some
of scrunchies. She puts these up over his feet and using leather (dried
this time) straps ran them through the rivets to over the scrunchies and
around. The leather bit is tied in a bow and the scrunchies are not too
tight.

So next time on a hot day where the pavement is blistering, if you see a big
awesome beagle-looking dog wearing moccasins with bright orange scrunchies,
it just might be Cash!

I take rec.pets.dogs.health seriously and, after having been a
regular contributor to the dog groups for 12 years, this is now
the only one I check on a regular basis.

This group helped save my dog's life and I try to return the
favour. This is not a group for chat. Chat belongs in .misc,
dog booties belong in .activities or .misc. Yes, a case can be
made for any topic being in any group, but use common sense.

Sorry for coming off as a hard-ass or net nanny, but
rec.pets.dogs.health is something special and is something
important to a great number of people.

Matt, seen a dog with 2nd degree burns on the paws? This is a simple way to
deal with hot pavement when the tar is bubbling. It's a spring off the
thread on how to deal with 100F and above temps and dog safety.

Then use some common sense yourself. It's part of another thread *here* on
how to protect your dog in high heat areas.

Not only should it stand alone, but your post was only
indirectly related to dog health issues and was presented as a
chat. You do a disservice to those who have legitimate
concerns.
