"~*LiveLoveLaugh*~" wrote in message ... Hi all... thanks in advance for reading me. Jubilee, my 2 y.o. Dachshund, has started some really bad behavior. When we go out (we meaning me, my Basset Hound and Chihuahua and Jubi), he runs into the kennel I built in the back of my garage. He acts AFRAID of me being in the backyard. In the mornings, the boys (my 3 dogs) go out about 6 a.m. When I get up, Jubilee has now started pooping and peeing on my screened in porch. The only scary thing that has happened in the past month or so is a visit from a snapping turtle that ended up in my (fully fenced) back yard. The turtle bit Jubi on the nose. Not bad... no need for a vet visit or anything. But Jubi was showing these signs (of being afraid) b4 the turtle visit. I'm posting today b/c it's been raining since early this morning and Jubi will NOT go out. It's getting worse as time goes by. I appreciate any and all suggestions!! I agree with Dogman that much of the problem may be that you are just letting your dogs out and not taking them out, and perhaps even more important, taking them for walks beyond the limits of your property (unless you have a farm or ranch or huge estate). Whether or not you are a fan of Cesar Millan, his basic mantra of exercise, discipline, and THEN affection can address many behavior issues. And the other vital concept is for you to adopt a calm assertive attitude, while your dogs should be, for the most part, calm and submissive. Dogs crave a competent leader who guarantees their needs of food, water, shelter, protection, and affection, and in return a well-balanced dog will be eager to do what you ask. And if you have built a relationship of mutual love and respect, you will both be happy and healthy. The structured "pack walk" is an important component of the relationship between humans and dogs. It should be a major part of your dogs' exercise, and yours as well, while it also is an opportunity for training and discipline. If you can walk your dogs in places where they will encounter other people, dogs, and unfamiliar things, it will contribute greatly to their socialization and confidence, if you assume a strong leadership role. Dogs live "in the present", and if they have had traumatic experiences in the past, they can be desensitized if you help them confront their fears, rather than reinforcing them with affection and "spoiling". Inappropriate peeing and pooping can be a part of a dog's "body language" which he is using to tell you something. There may be other more subtle signals that may be hard to read. If you can take some videos of you and your dogs it can be very helpful to others who may see things and give observations and advice. I have recently "discovered" video, and for less than $100 you can get all you need to make movies that can be posted on youtube and viewed by others with a lot of knowledge and experience. Also I would like to invite you to join the Dog Whisperer's forum, where there are a lot of good people who can really help. And they are not all Cesar fanatics; the core of his teaching is that there are many ways to improve your dog's behavior as well as your own confidence and abilities. http://community.sessionswithcesar.c....aspx?ForumID= Paul and Muttley www.muttleydog.com www.youtube.com/user/PaulAndMuttley |
