I'm starting to hear about similar incidents far too often.

Uh oh, a barking golden retriever! Shoot to kill!

That is tragic, as have been several recent incidents such as the killing of
the Husky "Bear-Bear" in a dog park near Baltimore a few months ago. But if
the same thing had happened to Muttley, where he was off-leash and acting in
a similar manner, would you blame the officer or me?

I'd blame both of you.

The people who owned the golden retriever were partly to blame too,
for putting an electronic fence in their FRONT YARD (WTF???).

So, once again, a poor dog paid the ultimate price for having clueless
owners (Hi, Muttley!), and living in an area with trigger-happy cops.

Sigh.

I've had a few clients who use a front yard IF. Coincidentally, the
dogs have been BITERS. Big surprise. 2 that come to mind had corner
lots. Way to stimulate your dog's territoriality and be a major
factor in the bites. My next door neighbors have an IF around their
whole yard, which is on a curve, so the front yard is pretty wide.
Their dog is very placid and doesn't bark, charge, run, or even move
most of the time. Still, an insurance adjuster reported that they had
an "aggressive German Shepherd Dog". He's a 50# husky mix who is the
most laid back dog in creation. I'm not a big fan of IFs, but
understand that on some properties they may be the only practical/
allowed answer. *IF* I used one, it would be the same way I use my
fenced or unfenced yard - with my presence and supervision. I am
responsible not only for my dogs' actions, but also for their safety.
What a concept.

Ah, yes, good old Clayton County, Georgia. NOT a dog friendly place to
start with.... Atlanta suburbs....

Default Cop shoots, kills family dog - added

A friend who is an Animal Control officer says that they constantly have
to control the law enforcement officers, who want to shoot anything
larger than a Chihuahua..... Every time they get called to assist with
dogs during a drug raid, it's even worse. Invariably, the ACOs have no
trouble capturing and loading up the pit bulls..... but have to keep
reminding the cops that they are having no problems, and this is a
routine pick up for them...... We're over on the SC state line, far
away from MetroAtlanta, but the mindset in cops extends all over the
state.....

First, just to set the record straight, it was a small (and poorly
designed) private dog run in the Millersville, Anne Arundel County area, not
a public dog park "near Baltimore". Second, while there's no question the
shooter over-reacted, he did genuinely believe he was protecting both his
own dog and his wife from Bear-Bear. Last and far from least, quite a few
people who live in that community did not experience Bear-Bear as the
"friendly" dog his owners claim he was, and the fact that he was in the run
with his owner's disabled brother didn't help.

Well, as Paul Harvey used to say, "and now you know the rest of the
story..."

Do you have documented evidence of what you claim, or is it what you have
heard from someone somewhere? It is important to get all the facts, and my
source was just the newscasts and excerpts from the TV and newspaper. Very
often they will embellish a story for maximum emotional appeal, which means
more readership and views and hence a wider audience for advertisements.
