What do you do with dogs when its so hot out - yet they are bored and need their exercise and are going nuts without it? Here's what works for us. Early morning walks - means getting up before the sun comes up, and it is going to be as cool as it is going to get for that day and late evening dog park jaunts. These days, we don't get to the dog park until 7:00, and stay till after 8:00, with some of the even later comers staying till it is almost 9:00. The dog park activity is self regulated (by Khan), the activity tends to come in bursts enabling some amount of cooling down, and it is easy enough to pick up and leave if it looks like the dog's having a tough time cooling down. I have seen only 1 dog overheat at the dog park (female pitbull), and the owner can be said to be beyond clueless. Suja |

Last night the same thing - I know what she wants - she wants to go for a walk/jog/rollarblade or to the dog park. She wants exercise. And jayjay is feeling the same way. jayjay wants to go for a 10 mile rollarblade trek with Chloe. :-) Thing is - when its so blasted hot - how much is too much and what cues do I look for. For me - even in this heat, i'm a bit more used to it and have no problem going for an hour or 2 with a 32oz bottle of water and go for a jog or whatever. But, I don't know if Chloe couldhandle that. What do you do with dogs when its so hot out - yet they are bored and need their exercise and are going nuts without it? Try just taking her on a half-hour jog. That's not too much but should be enough to exercise her. When you come home, if she continues hard-panting, soak her down with the hose. I know when Fancy is overheated because she will pant, hard, for more than 30 min. after being in the air conditioning and just laying down. It doesn't take much in this heat to get her to that point so I don't venture outside with her very often. Early mornings and late evenings are the safe times for her. Actually - that is what I did. We went rollarblading for about 15mins. (a 2 mile rollarblade). I went 1 mile, stopped, gave her water, waited abotu 5 mins to watch her panting and tongue, then rollarbladed back to the car, more water and we went home. I the got on my bike and went for a 1hr bike ride. So that I could get my exercise in. Then, when I got home I went swimming in the pool. By this time its after 9pm,the sun's set and its cooler outside. When I swim laps Chloe and I have a little game we play - I swim a lap, meet her at the end of the pool, come out of the water and she licks all the water off my face or arms, I then swim to the other side and she runs to the other side to meet me there.. She won't let me touch her - as I'm sure she thinks I'll try to get her in the pool. But she'llcome right up and lick my face, arms, back, head - whatever I let her lick. So she got another 1/2 hr exercise of that while I swam. Its a matterof finding that balance. During the cooler weather she has no problem going for the long walks and will even protest if I cut them too short for her liking. But I know in the heat I just can't do that to her. And to the poster who asked her age - she's abotu 1 to 1.5yrs old - still a "puppy" in a sense. http://home.comcast.net/~jennifer.is...b/c_index.html |

My pit bulls can chase their bigball around the grassy, large, fenced field without my having to worry about them getting into trouble. Or getting muddy in my now-grassless back yard. ;-) You can always sleep in the Winter... EmilyS |

I wish - chloe hates water and refuses to go in. Unless she's chasing bugs in the water from the flooding in our back yard - but even that is rare. Would she hate a sprinkler too? If she would run through the water maybe you could play fetch in the yard. Rachel (New Zealand) |
