Default outside on hot days... what to do

Poor Chloe is going nuts right now. Its 6pm, still in the upper 90's,
wicked humid, and the poor girl is bored to tears (literally whining around
the house). Last night the same thing - I know what she wants - she wants
to go for a walk/jog/rollarblade or to the dog park. She wants exercise.
And jayjay is feeling the same way. jayjay wants to go for a 10 mile
rollarblade trek with Chloe. :-)

Thing is - when its so blasted hot - how much is too much and what cues do I
look for. For me - even in this heat, i'm a bit more used to it and have
no problem going for an hour or 2 with a 32oz bottle of water and go for a
jog or whatever. But, I don't know if Chloe couldhandle that.

What do you do with dogs when its so hot out - yet they are bored and need
their exercise and are going nuts without it?

I'm sure there are dogs who'll keep going until they're dropping from heat
exhaustion, but Orson's good about letting me know he's too hot to keep
going. He plops down, with his tongue *huge*, and his face gets all squinty.
I don't ask him to run any more until his tongue's size looks better and
he's not panting so much. I also make sure he has cool water to drink.
Because he's all black, he gets really hot really quick if in the sun. If
his tongue or gums were to get very dark red or purple, it would be time to
take serious cooling action (tepid lake, bath, or hose water, not cold) or
to even see a vet for heat exhaustion.

Swimming. Is there any place with water you can take her?

When I take her - I do bring water with me - and a little bowl for her to
drink out of. Sometimes I'll even stop every 5 mins or so to let her drink.
I'm trying to get her to wait for another 1/2 hr before we go out - hoping
that by 7pm it will coold down a bit

she hates water. we've got a pool, and we live 3 miles from the beach (and
a dog beach at that). She hates the water and refuses to go in.

darned laptop - sent before I typed.

I wish - chloe hates water and refuses to go in. Unless she's chasing bugs
in the water from the flooding in our back yard - but even that is rare.

How about indoor, rolling fetch to burn some of her energy before you take
her? Orson gets fidgety when I put him off, too.

Hm. Having a lab, I can't imagine dogs who don't like water! Would it be an
option for her to play with other dogs at the dog beach, even though she
wouldn't be going in? I realize that depends on other dogs wanting to play
with her rather than swim, but you never know--you could wind up meeting a
suitable playmate for Chloe that you could arrange to meet periodically away
from the water.

Try just taking her on a half-hour jog. That's not too much but should be
enough to exercise her. When you come home, if she continues hard-panting,
soak her down with the hose. I know when Fancy is overheated because she
will pant, hard, for more than 30 min. after being in the air conditioning
and just laying down. It doesn't take much in this heat to get her to that
point so I don't venture outside with her very often. Early mornings and
late evenings are the safe times for her.

How does she feel about mist? I've accumulated misters of every
description, including one with a rubber tank you carry around your
waist. They don't do a lot when it's humid, but they help.
How old is Chloe? Last summer two old dogs of my acquaintance died of
heat on walks, not even jogs. The risk seems to increase with age.
Oh, BTW, you can hose your dogs down before you start out, too.
Depending on coat, it helps for a while.

Just because humans are slow and can't smell or hear
very well doesn't mean they don't possess a primitive
type of intelligence.
