I know purebred mushers who live close to other people and work full-time away from home, and they say that their neighbors report that the dogs are quiet all day, except they can tell when my friends get home because the dogs "roo" a bit when their car pulls into the driveway. My guys can be a little noisy around mealtimes or when it's time to go for a walk, but it's always Saber who sets them off. The one freaky barking experience I've had was when I heard what sounded a lot like Greta barking outside, but it was Emmett who'd spotted a (very sick) racoon outside the fence and suddenly let loose with a loud, deep bark. Emmett has a pretty great "roo roo" but on the few times he'd tried to bark previously he'd only been able to come up with a squeaky, high-pitched, and frankly embarrassing noise. He hasn't repeated his "real" bark since. -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - If you don't understand how things are connected, the cause of problems is solutions -- Amory Lovins |

Hi! Was wondering how many of us are Husky owners? raising hand I have Siberian Huskies, and so does Melinda Shore. Melinda does recreational sledding with her pack. I, clearly, am one. Amarok is doing quite fine by the way. Destruction has been limited to a plant. He tried biting some knobs of doors a few times but I was there to stop him. Can't believe how calm he is. Hardly ever barks. Walk him 2-3 times a day for 10-20 mins. He plays a lot inside with Buddy, the Chih-Tzu. He does do some of his needs outside but a LOT inside. Well, been only a week of training! I praise him like crazy outside, give a snack sometimes - and sometimes when he does it inside I bark at him :-) Vigilance is the key to prevent accidents inside, and of course praising him when he "performs" outside. I've not housebroken a Sibe puppy, but have housebroken quite a number of adult Sibes, and have always found them *very* easy to housebreak. Mustang Sally |

Hi sighthounds etc., snip Melinda does recreational sledding with her pack. [...] always found them *very* easy to housebreak. snip Interesting! Something I'll be looking into. We have bunches of snow here 4-6 months a year. How long on average would you say housebreaking takes? Can't really speak for puppies. I used crates with the adults, and most never actually had an accident in the house. Well, one male was a marathon marker, but stopped inside after neutering. My female Tasha had a few accidents until I was finally vigilant enough to catch her in the act, whereupon the light went on and there was never another accident. Don't let Siberian Selective Deafness Syndrome (often appears during training attempts) fool you. These are *very* intelligent dogs. Mustang Sally |
