harriet is the opposite. she counter surfs at home, but not
at other people's houses. i imagine that, given enough time
at my mom's house, she'd give it a whirl. and knowing my
mom, she'd get away with it. they keep all sorts of yummy
things on their counter and my mom is incapable of telling
harriet "no."

Rare event, but she went grocery shopping once, and left a
bunch of avocados on the counter. Following evening, she
comes home to find the avocados on the dog bed. Not eaten or
even bit into, just sitting there.

oh my, now *that's* funny! was she trying to hatch them?

A few days later, she left a box of cereal on the counter.
Came home to find an empty box of cereal sitting on the dog
bed.

now *that* sounds like elliott. on the rare occasions when he
thieves food, he hides it in harriet's crate. stinker.

Now she knows that she has a counter surfer.

hope she's got a good sense of humor!

i never knew Lola was a counter surfer, because she can't reach my
countertops.

i found out when she stole a basket of dog treats from the pet shop.
apparently she can reach their counters just fine.

Every time you

time to teach him to 'give' on cue.

When our puppy was chewing on stuff, we would remove the chewed thing
and "punish" it. Shoes were spanked and called BAD. We didn't do this
too near to the puppy, but we did it where she could see what we were
punishing. It's completely weird, but it worked. She did have one more
shoe incident many months after the first shoe punishment. That time, it
was a canvas shoe. We punished that bad shoe. She hasn't touched another
shoe. I probably have six pairs of shoes under my desk as I type. They
are all unmolested by dogs.

On Friday, when we had Pan, the soon to be visiting Great Dane over at
the house, I looked over to see her inspecting the countertop with all 4
feet on the ground. I am so not used to seeing a doggie head peek out
above the counters.

LOL! Does this mean that you just do a good job of keeping temptation
away from her grasp at home?

can't reach, or hasn't realized she can jump up? harriet
can't actually reach the counter (with four on the floor,
standing on tippy toes, she can just put her nose to the edge
of the counter top). she can easily steal stuff off the back
of the counter, though. usually she does it by standing on
her back legs, but i'm sure she boings all the way onto the
counter when i'm not around. i can't think of any other way
she could get stuff off the back of the far corner. *i* have
trouble reaching the stuff back there.

even on her hind legs, she can't see enough of what's up there to steal
anything. now Manu, on the other hand, he broke three of my wine glasses
his first day home!

nah, i think she's just overwhelmed by the mess.

I was thinking the same thing about my countertops, that no dog is
actually going to enjoy being on top of that obstacle course.
Housekeeping ain't my strong suit, and on any given day, I'll either
cook or clean. On most days, I do neither.

that's good! hopefully it won't occur to her to try climbing
or jumping onto the counter. believe me, you can live happily
without that sort of thing G.

Manu's a bit of a tank, eh?

harriet assures me that the messier the counter top, the
better. that way it's like a scavenger hunt. HTH!

i'll second that. there's *always* something more
entertaining to do than clean. besides, it's just going to
get messy again, anyway, so why bother?

that is a very good description of him. when i tell the pups it's time for
bed, he'll literally knock me over trying to get into his crate. he wants
to be sitting pretty by the time i get to the treat bag, in case i forget to
give him one.

he seems to have no concept of how much space he takes up. and i don't
think he's heard of Newton.
