I know it's not a problem but can someone tell me why my two dogs BC 16
months and Lab x BC 17 months love to sleep on their backs, feet up in the air during the day and all night long. They look so funny. I have been told it's a puppy thing and they will probably stop doing it as they get older. Shell |

Angel is 3 1/2 and still sleeps on her back with her feet in the air when it's warm here. Or on her side with her legs stretched out, forelegs together and hind legs together. In that position it is fun to watch her extend and retract her toes, stretching and flexing her feet while she sleeps... When it is cool (or she has recently had her hair stripped) she sleeps curled into a doughnut shape. And when she is peeved at me she first sinks backwards into a beutiful lion-pose down, then crosses her front legs, puts her head down on them and heaves a put-upon sigh. I will mention that poor Chewie, my first Airedale, a hyper male, NEVER slept on his back with his paws in the air. He had to be ready to leap up at the slightest sign of movement in the room. For that reason I think you're in luck, Shell: your dogs know how to chill out! Laura and Angel |

Subject: Sleeping dogs
From: hi (DeForest76) Date: 8/11/03 5:46 PM Pacific Well....I don't know if it's a puppy "thing". Don't think so either. My 13 yr old still does it all the time as does Georgie who is about 3. So maybe it's just a cooling thing for them. I think that is a very astute possibility. I also think it feels good to get the pressure off their spines and maybe even give their paws/ankles/knees a rest. Deb Shi the Svelte Georgie, Scurry-Stalker & Baby Lover Hank the Tank |

Loved the photo Shelly, that's exactly what my two look like. At 3am one morning I went up to bed to find my two in their baskets with all legs flying and Doug snoring like a pig. I giggled like mad. it's hard *not* to laugh at them when they're spraddle legged and snoring! when they do that, i'm always torn between watching them sleep and poking them in the belly to get a reaction out of them (yes, i really *am* mean enough to tickle a poor, defenseless, sleeping dog). -- shelly (foul wench) and elliott and harriet http://home.bluemarble.net/~scouvrette |

Murphy can't, she's too deep-chested so her centre of gravity is too high, she keeps toppling over. I know of Newfoundlands who love to sleep on their backs - they're so broad they have no problem with balance. Rachel (New Zealand) |
