Default Dog's leg to be amputated

My friend's dog was hit by a car last week. Her rear leg was badly
injured. They tried to save it but the bone just isn't healthy
enough. She's due for amputation the day after tomorrow (Sept 2). My
friend is a basket case.

Can anyone tell me what she should expect. This is a medium size dog.
I think she weighs about 50 lbs. She's like a small ridgeback with a
very sweet disposition.

I keep telling her the dog will be fine with three legs, but I'm sure
she'd rather hear it from someone who has been through it.

Any idea what the recovery period is?

Thanks so much.

That will depend on the dog. Most are hard to keep quiet for the requisite
period. A rear leg is much easier for the dog than a front. My 75 lb. dog was
fine without his front leg, but the rear will be a piece of cake.

There's a 3-legged male Boxer (missing front leg) who went through the same
thing not long ago. He still wiggles, romps, plays & runs like a normal
Boxer would. In all likelihood your friend will miss that leg much more
than the dog ever will.

Yeah, amputation is no big deal. Just like being a corpse like your
daughter's dog Summer. Even though she's a rotting corpse, thanks to you
and your fear, ignorance and incompetence, she's still romping and
running and playing over the rainbow bridge....

BHWHHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAA!!!

no, she's not romping, Tara O. she's dead and rotting in the ground,
thanks to you KILLING her, Tara O.

No specifics, but on an Animal Planet show I saw a two-legged dog playing
fetch, with no prostheses. Both legs (front and rear) were on the same
side of the dog. If anybody told that dog she wouldn't be able to run, she
wasn't listening. It was awesome to watch!

She should expect a period of adjustment, probably less than two months,
and then the dog will suddenly forgot that it ever had four legs.

the dog will be fine. And it will be a conversation piece.

My friend nina specializes in three leggers:
