It's official - the 5th permanent canine resident got added to our
household today. The foster Sibe puppy is staying.

Congratulations on the new permanent addition, Lynn.

She joins the 2
Malamutes that my roommate fostered, then adopted, and my GSD and
rottie/Nor. Elkhound cross. There's still one litter of foster kittens
we have left and I'm bringing in a Mom GSD & pups to foster on Tues..
The roommate is gone at obed. trials all weekend,

Curiosity got the best of me. Your roomie is doing obedience with her
Malamutes? That sort of falls in the 'This I've gotta see' category.

we're in the midst
of redoing the 35-yr old terracotta tile roof, & there was a sudden
death in my family Friday with no one but me locally to handle the
arrangements. Yes, I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed.

Wow! I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your family member, and hope
things slow down a bit for you. Take care.

Ian Dunbar did competitive obedience with Malamutes. That was a big
selling point before I read a lot of his stuff and attended a seminar
- - I figured anyone who could do that knew his stuff.

I think maybe one would have to define "competitive obedience" in Ian's case.
:-) As a behaviorist I feel he's outstanding (I used to be able to sit thru
all 3 days of an aggression seminar and still yearn for more at the end), and
also in teaching family-style obedience (getting the entire family involved in
classes), and getting puppies off to the right start, etc. I honestly can't
say as I've ever once heard him boast about any titles he put on either Omaha
or Phoenix tho. Competition obedience isn't his forte. It always falls into
the "This I've gotta see" category. :-) Especially if a Dalmatian was anywhere
in the vicinity.

Sally:
I don't know whether he put titles on them or not; boasting about
titles doesn't quite fit my image of him. But in any case, it's a
fact that he did some competitive obedience with Malamutes.

Dalmatians are much easier than Sibes/Mals in obedience, IMO.

Mustang Sally

No, I'm not saying he didn't do competitive obedience, even to the point of a
CD, and I'm not suggesting he's ever the type who would boast about it. I'm
saying his quality in competitive obedience would be nothing to boast about.
:-) Tho he does give out some good tips based on his experiences.

My reference to Dals was in regards to one of his Mals, Omaha I think, but it
could have been Phoenix. One of them had been rather badly beaten up by a Dal
when young and very strange antics indeed could occur if the Mal happened to be
in the vicinity of any Dals at a show. I remember a show once where the Dals
were being shown in conformation about two rings over when it was Ian's turn in
the obedience ring with his Mal. They didn't qualify that day. :-) Mal showed
Ian backs of his paws saying "see ya!" and took off outta the ring.
