Ok, so my neighbor allowed their pair of rotty's to breed again...
sigh The female "lady" is about 8 years old now and has only successfully raised one litter when she was younger. Lynn came over earlier today in a panic, Lady had had one puppy and left it on the concrete of the back porch. The puppy was crying and Lady was ignoring it. I was fixin' to go to work so dad went over with a box and some towels for the pup. I came home at midnight tonight and went over to see what had happened. Lady had had one more puppy without the humans around and had not removed the cowl. The pup suffocated. The other pup, Lynn picked the pup up out of the box and Lady snatched it out of her hand and killed it. :-( Stupid stupid dog. I was talking to her husband out in the driveway about work he was going to do on my house this weekend and I heard the distinct sound of a puppy crying! We followed the sound and found that Lady had had 4 more puppies, two of which were cold and dead. One more was attempting to nurse, (the one that was crying) and the forth pup was tangled up under the blanket she was laying on and quite alive. So, 2 of the 6 pups are alive. We removed the pups from the bitch and I placed them in a carry kennel that I usually use for rehabbing baby critters, (we have raised several week old kittens, raccoons and baby rabbits) and loaned them a heat lamp for them. Terry managed to milk about 2 cc's of milk from Lady's teats and I showed Lynn how to feed the pups with the syringes that I gave her. I always use syringes for babies as I have more control... I gave them the money to go to the feed store in the morning and get a can of powdered Esbilac puppy formula and will also teach her how to stimulate the pups to pee/poop, and encouraged Terry to milk Lady a bit more so the pups can get the colustrum. Time will tell, these two are very active and look very strong. I have raised many other baby mammals, just not puppies! I just hope they will be okay for the next several hours with no food... I'm not going to raise them, but will teach them what to do. Feed every 4 hours as much as they will take, stimilate them to potty. Increase the length of time between feedings after 4 weeks of age, and at 5 weeks, start introducing them to canned food. Wean at 8 weeks. Lots and LOTS of work, but it'll be good experience for them. Maybe they will get the dogs fixed finally. :-P Wish us luck?
