Default Breed suggestions

I am researching for my next dog(s). It won't be for a while, but here
is what I'm looking for. 1. Very trainable, wants to please type 2. Good
with kids, other dogs and cats
3. Playful, sense of humour 4. Calm indoors, active outdoors. 5. Medium
size 30-50 pounds. 6. Good nose and desire for scent discrimination 7. A
dog who likes to fetch 8. Low shedder. I can tolerate the seasonal
shedders, but I want little hair in the house the rest of the time We
are middle-aged people, middle 50s. These dogs will be our retirement
dogs. We plan to travel in our motor home and we have little dirt bikes
for exploring the desert.
We want dogs small enough to ride on the bikes when they get tired. My
husband is a rock hound and I want to train the dogs to hunt for
meteorites. I recently heard that dogs can discriminate between real
and fake emeralds so I figure they can pick up the combination
iron/nickel that makes up meterorites. Any suggetions?

A Pembroke Welsh Corgi. Though the shedding factor is
higher than your what you described as your desired
dog. Maybe an mixed breed from a shelter? Or
"petfinders.com"?

Mini poodles would make you very happy if you could keep up with their
intelligence. They do require frequent grooming, but they are low to no
shedders, come in a rainbow of colors, and have personality coming out their
ears.

Both Golden and Flat-coated Retrievers fit this bill pretty well. So do some
BC's, maybe a Beardie. When you want easy to train, sporting and herding
breeds top the list.

5. Medium
size 30-50 pounds.

This is where you get stuck I think. When I think of dogs in this size range
(keep in mind that Golden and Flat-coat bitches would be possible at the top
end of this weight range), I think spaniels, which I don't think fit many of
your qualifications. There are a lot of mixed breeds that may give you the
best of all of these things! Depending on the individual dog, an Australian
Shepherd may be a good choice.

6. Good nose and desire for scent discrimination 7. A
dog who likes to fetch

Once again, retrievers are surely going to do these things.

8. Low shedder. I can tolerate the seasonal
shedders, but I want little hair in the house the rest of the time

Another stumbling block. Poodles are smart, more active indoors than you may
want though, and come in a variety of sizes. And there's that very appealing
no-shed thing. An American Water Spaniel is not a common breed, but may be
what you're looking for.

We want dogs small enough to ride on the bikes when they get tired.

You better stick with the smaller side of your range then and plan some safe
ways of doing this.

Hmm - I can't say I have known anyone who has taught this. Interesting, but I
wouldn't count on it!
