Default housebreaking an old dog?

about 6 months ago i adopted a 15-year-old miniature poodle through
the vet's office where i work. she's a sweet little dog, has fairly
advanced heart disease, and is dumb as mud. but i love her to death.

i don't know if she was ever housebroken. she has no manners at all.
she doesn't know even "sit". nothing.

You can start with crate training her just as you would a puppy, but, it's
likely that due to her age and illness, that she may never catch on.

Poor thing. Her old "owners" deserve to be shot for giving up a dog at that
age.

There's a good possibility that her "old owners are dead, in a nursing home,
or otherwise unable to care for her, the grown children didn't care for the
poop either so took her to shelter.
That is why I have made provisions in my will for my dogs.

when i first brought her home she had numerous accidents every day.
we've gotten much better, but i don't think it's so much that she's
housebroken. i think she's just fairly well-managed.

Personally, I'd just continue to manage, especially if she is very
anti-crate ~ hasn't she been through enough stress without a whole new set
of house rules to learn. I'd give her loads of love & hugs and work gently
with basic manners but forget serious house training and basic obedience.

I don't believe in God, but if I did, I would be hoping that he's watching
you and will remember this great kindness that you are doing for this little
pooch.

I have a 13 year old boy, as much as i love puppies, there is just something
wonderful about old dogs. My next dog i get will be an older dog from the
rspca
