We adopted a shelter dog (border collie/terrier, 2yrs., spayed) two
months ago. We crate-trained her, and she is quite happy-- likes the
crate, doesn't seem to have any emotional issues. She was largely
housebroken in a couple of weeks, but she was still peeing and pooing
in 4 selected rooms. Two were no problem-- we could simply close the
doors-- but two are a little more difficult: our daughter's room and
the basement. We close our daughter's door, but she's 6 and
sometimes forgets. The basement has a pet door, and it's necessary to
keep that open so the cat can reach her litter box.

We've been successful in creating enough of an obstacle so the cat can
get in the basement, but the dog can't (or won't). But the daughter's
room problem remains. We Natures Miracled the rug, and that didn't
stop it, then we sent the rug out to be cleaned, and that didn't stop
it. She'll evacuate there immediately after being let out, she'll
evacuate there with my daughter right there to tell her "no".

We let her out quite frequently, so it's never a case of needing to go
out desperately.

One thought was that she didn't feel those rooms were "hers": we
played with her and sat with her in our daughter's room, and nothing's
changed. Another thought was that she was attempting to exert
dominance over our daughter and our cat, but the cat is clearly the
alpha pet, and she's never challenged our daughter in any other way
(and it doesn't explain the other 2 rooms, although it's been a long
time since she's been able to test them).

I'm almost out of ideas. I think we'll try moving her food and water
to my daughter's room, to try to get her to identify with it more
fully.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That might make the problem worse. Dogs don't pee on stuff to say
"eww...get that away from me," they pee on stuff to say "This is MINE. MINE
MINE MINE. Not yours. MINE."
