Default Question for those who've bred dogs - or seen it happening

This question was triggered by the post from the man whose older male dog
was humping his new pup.

It's my impression that when dominance mounting happens, there's little
preliminary or appetitive behavior. And it's my impression that when
mating is occurring - or trying to occur, that there are several appetitive
behaviors - sniffing, licking, chasing, nuzzling - before "the act."

This is probably a very naïve view, because I've never seen dogs mating,
except for brief clips on TV, and I wasn't looking at them with this
question in mind.

Could someone clarify some of the differences to look for between dominance
mounting and mount for sex (or attempted sex)?

Thanks -

FurPaw

Mate-mounting doesn't always involve any kind of wooing or even friendly
behavior between the dogs. Sometimes it can be downright aggressive with
the bitch not wanting the male anywhere near her (even though she's ready)
and only giving in once the male persists and mounts her. From what I've
seen, there is no difference in appearance between dominance mounting and
mate-mounting unless you're witnessing same-gender mounting (then its quite
obvious its not for reproduction).

And...although I've not seen any breedings take place (other than
TV!), I have seen my fair share of dominance humping around
here, especially lately!
Here, Bodhi is *always* the one making the play. He gets this
look in his eyes, I kid you not. It's sort of glazed over, and he just
perks his ears up and tight together. Coda will inevitably be engaged in
playing with me or DH w/ a toy, waiting for us to throw it. Bodhi will
"dance" around, trying to get into just the right position. He'll
nose-poke
Coda right above the tail.
Up he goes, and that's as far as it gets, because Coda scolds him
with a verbal warning. But, he tries again, and again, and again.

Finally, Coda will tell him off enough that he gets the point, and then
Bodhi starts this hilarious "flirting" behavior that involves him sidling
up beside Coda, then circling his butt toward Coda, swishing his bushy tail
in Coda's face. Round
and round he'll do it several times, then he'll usuall try to mount Coda
again, then they'll get tired of the game (or we will, if we haven't before
this point) and stop.
It's funny to watch them, because Bodhi is so flamboyant about his
twirling. He, BTW, acted the same way last weekend when he met
his first bitch that was in heat (sans the mounting, neither the humans,
nor the bitch was about to let that happen!). It's a learning experience
to watch him behave, that's for sure!
